NANCY, FRANCE
Nancy is the capital of Meurthe-et-Moselle dept.  It is located in northeastern France, on the Meurthe River and the Marne-Rhine Canal.  It is the administrative, economic, and educational center of Lorraine.  In the city are a noted fine arts museum, an academy of fine arts, and the University, which was founded in 1854.  Nancy grew around a castle of the dukes of Lorraine and became the duchy capital in the 12th century.  In 1477, Charles the Bold of Burgundy was defeated at the gates of Nancy by the forces of René II of Lorraine.  The major part of the center of Nancy, a model of urban planning and a gem of 18th century architecture, was built during the liberal reign of Stanislaus I, Duke of Lorraine and ex-king of Poland.  Nancy passed to the French crown in 1766.  In 1848 it was one of the first cities to proclaim the Republic.  From 1870 to 1873 it was occupied by the Germans following the Franco-Prussian War, and it was partially destroyed in World War I.  Points of interest include the Place Stanislaus, the Place de la Carrière, an 18th century cathedral, and the 16th century ducal palace.  The Church of Cordeliers (15th century) houses the magnificent tombs of the princes of Lorraine.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM
A complete presentation of the courses offered at Nancy, detailing the availability of courses may be found on their website.

DEFLE Program
The French Department of Foreign Language (DEFLE) at Nancy accommodates non-French speaking foreign students and proposes formations intended for all levels: beginners through advanced.  DEFLE offers:

  • Courses adapted to your level and your needs.  They will test and evaluate the student’s skill in oral and written expression and comprehension, and placement will be made accordingly.
  • Half-year French courses (one semester)
  • Intensive Sessions (two or four weeks)

The French program at Nancy helps to facilitate the integration of the students to the French university life (to discover the French education system, etc.).  It presents Nancy in different perspectives such as practical and cultural living, etc.  It also teaches students to comfortably communicate while speaking French in everyday situations, such as asking directions, finding one’s way, etc.

COURSE EQUIVALENCIES
The course equivalencies spreadsheets have been compiled from past approved Academic Plan forms.  They show when the course was last approved and how it transferred back to La Crosse.  You may notice that some classes satisfied several UWL options.

This list is not comprehensive nor does it take the place of  meeting with your advisor for final approval!  They are meant to be a guide of what courses may be appropriate for your studies abroad.

HOUSING AND MEALS
Accommodations are at the University’s dormitories and are arranged on your behalf.  You may review the accommodations on-line.  The residence halls closest to the University are: Monbois, Boudonville, Medreville, Notre Dame de Lourdes (females only).  The International Office at Nancy 2 will provide you with the accommodation form.

Lunch and dinner are served at the university’s cafeterias on campus at the student’s own expense.

PASSPORTS & VISAS
Before you travel abroad, you will need to obtain a passport, which will serve as proof of your U.S. citizenship. A passport may allow you to gain entry to (and exit from) other countries. Depending on the country to which you're traveling, a visa may be required as well. Entry requirements vary from one country to another. The U.S. State Department issues travel warnings specific to certain countries, and offers tips and publications relevant to travel abroad generally. Well in advance of your departure, you should also familiarize yourself with international travel health issues, and health recommendations specific to your destination.
