Spring Application Deadline: August 15

LINNAEUS UNIVERSITY
Linnaeus (formerly Växjö) University—the second largest university in southern Sweden—is well known for its strong international profile.  More than 15,000 students are enrolled in one of 65 different programs and 1,200 courses in about 50 different subjects. There are also 250 Ph.D. students and 1,000 people are employed as researchers, teachers or administrative staff.  Approximately 400 students from Linnaeus will go abroad to study and the same number of international students will come to Linnaeus as part of their exchange program.  Student and faculty exchanges involve a number of universities all over the world.  Linnaeus’ student exchange is backed up by a well-developed infrastructure, computing facilities, housing, and sports facilities for the benefit of their students.

VÄXJÖ, SWEDEN
Växjö (pronounced Vex-sure) is the “capital” of Kronoberg County in southeastern Sweden.  The town is situated 250 kilometers northeast of Copenhagen and 420 kilometers southwest of Stockholm.  Växjö belongs to the Swedish province of Småland, also known as the Kingdom of Crystal as some of the world’s finest glassworks are located there.

Växjö is surrounded by a beautiful countryside.  Forests, lakes and rivers make Småland an attractive area for those who love outdoor activities.  Växjö, with some 75,000 inhabitants, is a highly modern town.  There are excellent sports facilities plus a rich cultural live—with a concert hall, a theater, museums and cinemas.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM
The programs offered are conducted in English (unless otherwise stated) for both Swedish and international students.  Most of the programs consist of a full-time semester of study (20 weeks) with several courses making up the curriculum.  The courses are generally on the advanced undergraduate level and usually require two years of successfully completed university studies for admission.

In Sweden, a student usually studies one course at a time (consecutive scheduling) rather than several different courses at the same time (parallel scheduling).  Examination takes place after each course and at the end of the term the student receives a cumulative mark for the program besides the individual marks for each course.

A full listing of Linnaeus' courses offered can be found at: http://www.vxu.se/english/students/exchange/.

COURSE EQUIVALENCIES
The course equivalencies spreadsheets have been compiled from past approved Academic Plan forms.  They show when the course was last approved and how it transferred back to La Crosse.  You may notice that some classes satisfied several UWL options.

This list is not comprehensive nor does it take the place of  meeting with your advisor for final approval!  They are meant to be a guide of what courses may be appropriate for your studies abroad.

HOUSING
The student dormitories are located on campus, or in a student area downtown.  The average estimated cost for a single student room including private bathroom with shower and toilet is approximately SEK 2,300 per month or SEK 11,000 per semester ($305-$1,460US).  A deposit of SEK 1000 ($135US), paid in advance, is required in order to guarantee accommodation.  The average cost of food is estimated to be approximately SEK 80 ($11) per day. The increasing number of exchange students exceeds the available dorm rooms; consequently alternative housing in varying price ranges may be arranged.

More information on accommodations may be found at: http://www.vxu.se/english/students/exchange/accommodation/index.xml

PASSPORTS & VISAS
Before you travel abroad, you will need to obtain a passport, which will serve as proof of your U.S. citizenship. A passport may allow you to gain entry to (and exit from) other countries. Depending on the country to which you're traveling, a visa may be required as well. Entry requirements vary from one country to another. The U.S. State Department issues travel warnings specific to certain countries, and offers tips and publications relevant to travel abroad generally. Well in advance of your departure, you should also familiarize yourself with international travel health issues, and health recommendations specific to your destination.
