UNIVERSIDAD VERACRUZANA
The University of Veracruz was founded in 1944 and offers degrees in
traditional humanities, computer science, business administration, and
medicine. It is considered one of the leading provincial universities in
Mexico. The University of Veracruz and the Veracruz Cultural Institute
sponsor some of the finest festivals of art, music, and theatre. The
University also has an outstanding Archaeology program featuring a
Museum, considered one of the finest in the world both for its stunning
contemporary architecture and its remarkable collection of artifacts
representative of the Olmec, Totonac, and Juastec cultures.
Archaeological fieldwork can be arranged on site at El Tajín,
Quiahuiztlán and other ruins. Many of the courses taught at the
University can be taken for credit as part of your study abroad program.
Workshops in dance, graphic arts, and theatre are available to you both
through the University and a variety of other cultural institutions.
The School for Foreign Students, Escuela para Estudiantes Extranjeros (EEE-UV), offers you the opportunity to improve your Spanish and learn about Latin American culture. Arts and folklore workshops and field trips are organized throughout the year to help students appreciate and enjoy Mexican culture and traditions. Local outings, visits to market places, shops and family factories, as well as salsa dancing and crafts lessons enrich your academic program.
XALAPA, VERACRUZ
Xalapa, a picturesque city set in the
coffee-growing country, is in an area of impressive natural beauty and
remarkably rich archeological and anthropological resources. Xalapa has
a population of more than 500,000 and is the capital city of the state
of Veracruz. It is located 199 miles southeast of Mexico City and 67
miles northwest of the seaport of Veracruz. At 4,200 feet above sea
level, Xalapa's population lives in a valley formed by five hills. The
city is surrounded by mountains, which include the snow-capped, extinct
volcano Pico de Orizaba, towering 17,000 feet above the city. Although
Xalapa's intellectual and cultural climate is lively, the city has kept
a small town atmosphere. The sober, tile roofed buildings - some of
which date from the colonial period - are mainly characteristic of the
Porfirian period.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Spanish courses at five levels, literature, culture, and civilization
courses are available during the semester. Students are placed in
courses at the appropriate level according to the results of the test
they take upon arrival.

This program provides you with an opportunity for personal interaction
using the Spanish language in a natural setting. It is tailored to the
individual needs of each visiting student. Students are paired with
tutors of similar interests or with common fields of study or work.
Internships
Internships can be arranged for advance-level students in a variety of
areas. A placement fee is required (not included in program fees).
University of Veracruz Courses
Many of the courses taught at the University can be taken for credit as
part of your study abroad program. The School for Foreign Students will
assist you in making arrangements. Updated information about the

COURSE EQUIVALENCIES

They show when the course was last approved and
how it transferred back to La Crosse. You may notice that
some classes satisfied several UWL options.
This list is not comprehensive nor does it take the place of meeting with your advisor for final approval! They are meant to be a guide of what courses may be appropriate for your studies abroad.
HOUSING AND MEALS
The School for Foreign Students has a directory of families who provide
housing for international students. You will be assigned a shared room
and bath, with ample space to study and carry out your class
assignments. The host family will provide three meals a day; if you have
special dietary needs, arrangements can be made to accommodate them at a
slight extra cost.
PASSPORTS & VISAS
Before you travel abroad, you will need
to obtain a passport, which will serve as proof of your U.S.
citizenship. A passport may allow you to gain entry to (and exit from)
other countries. Depending on the country to which you're traveling, a
visa may be required as well.
Entry requirements vary from one country to another. The U.S. State
Department issues
travel warnings specific to certain countries, and offers
tips and publications relevant to travel abroad generally. Well in
advance of your departure, you should also familiarize yourself with
international travel health issues, and health recommendations
specific to your destination.

Fall: late-August to mid-December
Spring: late-January to mid-May

ADMISSION CRITERIA
2.5 GPA minimum, 2.75+ GPA preferred
Second-semester sophomore standing (45 credits minimum)
4 semesters college-level Spanish minimum (SPA 202 or the equivalent)
Open to students from other universities

The program fee includes the following:

Airfare is not
included in the program price.
