Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies

MIDDELBURG CENTER FOR TRANSATLANTIC STUDIES
MCTS was conceived in 1995 by representatives of 12 institutions across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, and offered its first teaching program in Spring, 1998. Its goal has been to provide a unique educational program based on the interactive relationship between peoples and cultures on both sides of the Atlantic. It is the first institution devoted to such a mission: no other study-abroad program offers such an opportunity for an international educational body to gather in one location to explore common problems through a variety of teaching disciplines. At a time when education and global perspectives are high on public and governmental agendas, the MCTS has already begun to attract national and international attention because of its unique mission and innovation.

MIDDELBURG
Middelburg, capital of the province of Zeeland, lies on the Veere-Vlissingen Canal on the former island of Walcheren.  It is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, with origins going back to Carolingian times.  It is an important market and commercial center for an extensive agricultural area.  Major contributions are also made to the town's economy by industry (electrical engineering, chemicals, metal processing) and the tourist trade.

On May 17, 1940, the town suffered heavy damage in a German air attack, but the major buildings and streets which were destroyed were almost all restored in the original style after the war.  In 1975 Middelburg's successful restoration policy earned it the designation of "European Heritage City".

ACADEMIC PROGRAM
The courses offered at Middelburg vary from term to term.
The courses, arranged in four different blocks, represent a wide variety of topics and are taught by instructors from several different universities and countries.  Click here for MCTS course descriptions.

Each student will be allowed to take one course from Roosevelt Academy from their 200 and 300 level courses.  Students will register for three (3) credits during the summer program.

COURSE EQUIVALENCIES
The course equivalencies spreadsheets have been compiled from past approved Academic Plan forms.  They show when the course was last approved and how it transferred back to La Crosse.  You may notice that some classes satisfied several UWL options.

This list is not comprehensive nor does it take the place of  meeting with your advisor for final approval!  They are meant to be a guide of what courses may be appropriate for your studies abroad.

HOUSING AND MEALS
Students will live in residence halls with the students from Roosevelt Academy.  Each student will receive 1200 Euros as a meal stipend so they may purchase food or meals.  Each student will have cooking facilities and there is no cafeteria.

PASSPORTS & VISAS
Before you travel abroad, you will need to obtain a passport, which will serve as proof of your U.S. citizenship. A passport may allow you to gain entry to (and exit from) other countries. Depending on the country to which you're traveling, a visa may be required as well. Entry requirements vary from one country to another. The U.S. State Department issues travel warnings specific to certain countries, and offers tips and publications relevant to travel abroad generally. Well in advance of your departure, you should also familiarize yourself with international travel health issues, and health recommendations specific to your destination.
