STUDY-IN-SCOTLAND
University of Aberdeen: APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 1
University of Aberdeen
The University of Aberdeen,
the oldest university in Scotland and the fifth oldest university in the
United Kingdom, was founded in 1495. With over 13,900 students, the
university has over 120 nationalities represented, and is composed of
19% international students. The university has over 590 first-degree
programs, libraries with over 1,050,000 volumes, and over 150 sports
clubs and societies.
The Aberdeen Area
The city of Aberdeen lies on
the northeast coast of Scotland with miles of beaches, dunes, and
cliffs. With a population of 220,000 people, Aberdeen is big enough for
the “big city” feel, but is compact enough to make it student-friendly.
The historic campus is located on Old Aberdeen, just a fifteen minute
bus ride from the bustling city-centre. The city hosts cinemas, museums,
galleries, and leisure and sports facilities, and has a fantastic
nightlife. Not far away are the Scottish Highlands with castles,
mountains, and miles of North Sea coastland.
Academic Program
The University of Aberdeen summer school program is open to all students
and is specifically designed for the summer school study experience.
As well as an interest in Scotland’s archaeology, you should have
achieved GPA level 2.75. The program aims to minimize the amount of time
spent in a classroom and to maximize the amount of experiential learning
in and around Scotland. Aimed primarily at prospective students from the
United States and Canada, the course is also open to prospective
students from the UK on a residential or non-residential basis.
The course will cover the period from the end of the last ice age to the founding of the nation. Areas covered will include: the first peoples – hunters and gatherers, the first farmers: megalithic tombs and stone circles, the Beaker People and arrival of bronze, the Celts, Picts and Romans and the Vikings.
The course will be taught by means of illustrated lectures and excursions and hands-on sessions at the University’s Marischal Museum. Excursions, led by a member of University staff, will include 3 full-day excursions departing from Aberdeen, and one 5-day excursion with 2 overnights in Caithness and Sutherland and 2 overnights in the Orkney Islands. See Class Schedule.
This course is equivalent to UWL’s ARC/HIS 275:Ancient Britain & Ireland course.
Housing and Meals
Students will be housed in Hillhead Halls of Residence in self catering
flats. These are very conveniently located a few minutes walk from the
Old Aberdeen campus (where classes are held) and a short bus ride from
Aberdeen city centre. Students have single-study bedrooms with
washbasins in flats housing a maximum of four students with shared
cooking facilities. Facilities include a laundry room, a TV room and a
lounge. Students normally resident in northeast Scotland can attend the
course on a residential or non-residential basis.
For further information please see http://www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation/hillhead.shtml
Bed and breakfast will be provided for the duration of the summer school and lunches will be provided on the teaching days of the program. Bed and breakfast is provided on the excursion to Orkney, Caithness & Sutherland. Evening meals can be prepared in the self catering accommodation or you may choose to eat out. Learning the British way of shopping and cooking are all part of the cultural benefits of studying at the University of Aberdeen for a summer session. There are supermarkets (grocery stores) very nearby in Aberdeen and countless places to eat out cheaply.
University
of Stirling
During summer the University of Stirling
is running the International Summer School open to international
students from around the world. The International Summer School (ISS)
presents a unique opportunity to sample student life at the University,
while gaining credits towards your degree at your home institution.
The Stirling Area
Stirling was the ancient capital of Scotland and is also home to
many historic sites and monuments. Building on its historic foundations
to create an exciting mix of the old and new, Stirling has a thriving
centre and a growing population of around 40,000. Big enough to offer
the full 'city experience' of shopping, café culture and nightlife,
Stirling is still compact enough to retain a warm community feel, making
it a home from home that's as easy to get around as it is to settle in.
Today Stirling is a modern tourism, administrative and manufacturing
centre, with the shopping, amenities and recreational facilities you
would expect to find in a Scottish city. The cosmopolitan city centers
of Glasgow and Edinburgh are also less than an hour's travel from
Stirling.
Academic Program
The University of Stirling employs teaching
staff who are consistently amongst the best in their fields and are
dedicated to the success of their students. Courses have been tailored
especially for the ISS to help you get the most out of your studies in
Scotland. A key component of your ISS course modules will be the class
field trips that complement classroom learning. For instance, a visit to
one of Scotland’s main sporting venues helps contextualize your studies
in Sports Management and your Jacobite history course module comes alive
with a trip to Glencoe and Eilean Donan Castle. For more details,
review their
International Summer School Brochure.
Social Activities &
Field Trips
Beyond your studies, the ISS will incorporate a range
of social and cultural activities thus enabling you to get to know other
students on the ISS, other local and international students at the
University as well as giving you the opportunity to travel and
experience more of Scotland.
Dates
The ISS will be structured in two 4-week
blocks which can be taken independently or consecutively. For
specific dates, refer to their
International Summer School Brochure.
COURSE EQUIVALENCIES
The
course equivalencies
spreadsheets have been compiled from
past approved Academic Plan forms.
They show when the course was last approved and
how it transferred back to La Crosse. You may notice that
some classes satisfied several UWL options.
This list is not comprehensive nor does it take the place of meeting with your advisor for final approval! They are meant to be a guide of what courses may be appropriate for your studies abroad.
PASSPORTS & VISAS
Before you travel abroad, you will need
to obtain a passport, which will serve as proof of your U.S.
citizenship. A passport may allow you to gain entry to (and exit from)
other countries. Depending on the country to which you're traveling, a
visa may be required as well.
Entry requirements vary from one country to another. The U.S. State
Department issues
travel warnings specific to certain countries, and offers
tips and publications relevant to travel abroad generally. Well in
advance of your departure, you should also familiarize yourself with
international travel health issues, and health recommendations
specific to your destination.
