External Defibrillator (AED) Program
- I. AED EQUIPMENT AND LOCATION
- Current Locations are:
- University Police Squad Car
- Police Station
- University Physical Plant
- Wittich Hall- near pool entrance
- Mitchell Hall- near field house/strength center
- Cartwright Center- Information Counter

- II. MAINTENANCE AND TESTING
- Status indicator will be check on a daily basis during routine patrol by Officers.
- Check and document for “OK” on handle.
- Report other sign to AED coordinator
- Supply inventory will be check for change or expiration dates the 1st Monday of each month by a day shift staffmember
- Program documents and documentation of maintenance and testing will be saved for five (5) years in the AED coordinator’s office.
- Status indicator will be check on a daily basis during routine patrol by Officers.

- IV. ANNUAL NOTIFICATION OF COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE AGENCIES BY PROGRAM COORDINATOR
The type of device, intended use area, plan for maintenance and testing and location of the device on the premises shall be confirmed annually in writing to:

(608) 785-9634 - V. USE OF THE AED
- Determine unresponsiveness of victim and activate the Medical Response Plan.
- If victim is unresponsive, call “911” and get AED.
- Assess the victim: airway, breathing, and circulation.
- Initiate CPR, if required, while AED is brought to the victim’s side
- Activate call to additional responders and indicate location of victim.
- Designate an individual to wait at the entrance to direct the EMS to the victim
- Upon arrival, place the AED near head of the victim and close to AED operator
- Prepare to use the AED
- Turn the power ON
- Bare and prepare chest for AED use.
- Attach the AED to the victim.
- Stop CPR while the device analyzes the heart rhythm.
- Follow the machine prompts for further action. If a shock indicated, be sure all rescuers “clear” before shock is administered.
- Upon arrival, EMS shall take charge of victim.
- Provide victim information: name, age, known medical problems, time of incident
- Provide information as to current condition and number of shocks administered.
- Completion of Incident Report
- After each use, a detailed Officer’s report will be completed and submitted before the end of the Officer’s shift.
- Determine unresponsiveness of victim and activate the Medical Response Plan.
- VI. AFTER USE OF AED
- The AED will be check and put back in readiness state. The program coordinator will be called
- Restock AED per AED inventory.
- Clean AED if needed according to manufacturer recommendations..
- Document readiness
- A critical Incident Debriefing session will be held if requested for all initial responders. Contact CISD- Gunderdsen/Lutheran at 789-7624
- The program Medical Director shall be notified of AED use.
- Follow-up report will be submitted to Medical Director
- Arrange for quality improvement review.
- The AED will be check and put back in readiness state. The program coordinator will be called
- VII. AED INVENTORY
- Readiness status will be assured by check as documented on check sheet.
- Readiness status will be assured following any AED use as documented by the AED coordinator.
