Visiting Faculty and Scholar Computer Support Policy

Approved March 9, 2009

Purpose:

To clearly present the computer technology support available to faculty and scholars with visiting appointments at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse (UW-L).

Background and Reason for the Policy:

The University’s goals are for university visitors to have productive and enjoyable experiences while visiting UW-L. One component in helping to make this happen is to support the visitors’ computer technology needs. This policy clarifies the types and levels of computer hardware and software support provided visitors by Information Technology Services (ITS).

Policy:

ITS provides support for specific hardware and software owned or leased by UW-L and run on university owned hardware. A list of currently supported hardware, operating systems and application software can be found on the university’s ITS Support Center website (www.uwlax.edu/itssupport). It is strongly recommended that the department/unit sponsoring the visiting scholar or faculty visit makes provisions for the use of a UW-L owned and ITS managed computer.

Guidelines:

Operating systems and application software that are licensed by UW-L for campus wide use are licensed to be used on university owned computers. There are some exceptions to this general rule. A few software licenses also cover the use of the software on computers owned by employees. In some cases, the software must be purchased by a campus unit and supplied to the individual through “work-at-home” policies.

Given the nature of the university’s software licenses and the liability concerns associated with servicing non-university owned hardware and software, it is recommended that visiting faculty and scholars be assigned, for their use for the duration of their university visit, computer hardware and software that is owned or licensed by the university and supported by ITS.

Consequences of non-compliance:

No computer hardware and software support will be available for non-UW-L owned or leased computer hardware and software.

References and notes:

This policy makes the level of support provided visiting faculty and scholars the same as the standard level of support provided to the campus faculty and staff.
