The Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs interacts with UW-L's faculty, staff and student communities. The office, which is led by Provost Heidi Macpherson seeks to foster collaboration across the campus as it manages policies and practices that affect the academic life of the university as a whole.

Dr. Heidi Macpherson received her BA (Summa Cum Laude) in English and Creative Writing from St. Cloud State University. She emigrated to the UK the summer of 1990 and became a dual national in 2003. She received her PhD from the University of Newcastle in 1996 and began her academic career at the University of Central Lancashire (1995 to 2007). In 2007 she was appointed Dean of Humanities at De Montfort University (Leicester, England) and subsequently held two different Pro Vice Chancellor positions at DMU: PVC for Teaching, Learning and Student Experience, and PVC for Research and Innovation.  She took up her current appointment as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in July of this year.

She has held a number of positions on national education bodies in the UK, including Chair of the British Association for American Studies; Executive Committee member for the Council for College and University English, and Vice Chair of the Research Assessment Exercise subpanel for American Studies. She was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2007 and is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. She also has a strong interest in international education.

Her research and scholarly background is in North American women’s literature and contemporary transatlantic literature. She is the author of Women’s Movement (2000), Courting Failure (2007), Transatlantic Women’s Literature (2008), and The Cambridge Introduction to Margaret Atwood (2010). She has also co-edited two collections of essays and 3-volume encyclopaedia set.
