Dean Search and Screen Updates
The College of Liberal Studies and the College of Science and Health are each seeking to fill the position of dean. The position vacancy announcements have been posted to a variety of online recruitment sites and are available for viewing at www.uwlax.edu/vacancies. Print advertisements appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education and will appear in several other publications. Each position has a separate committee to review files and recommend finalists. We are initiating searches to fill 48 faculty/IAS positions. The positions will come with appropriate search and screen dollars, supply and equipment dollars, and start-up funds as requested by the deans to support the purchase of computer equipment, furniture, lab equipment, research stipends, etc. In addition to the regular advertisements, we placed a large ad for UW-L focusing on the GQ&A initiative in the October 17 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education. Kim Vogt, chair of Joint Planning & Budget, recently distributed a note regarding the proposal process for nine staff positions to be identified this fall and hired for next year.
Wisconsin Teaching Fellows & Scholars Program
Applications for the UW System 2009-2010 Wisconsin Teaching Fellows & Scholars Program are due November 7 by email to Bill Cerbin, email@example.com. The provost and Dean's Council members select two UW-L faculty members to participate in the program each year. A teaching fellow is an outstanding pre-tenure faculty or instructional academic staff and a Teaching Scholar is an outstanding tenured faculty or instructional academic staff with 10 years of teaching experience. Both participants attend Faculty College, a Summer Institute, and several meetings. Participants also complete a scholarship of teaching and learning project during the year and then serve as a model and mentor in their discipline and campus-wide in efforts to advance the practice of teaching through scholarly inquiry into student learning. Additional information and applications are available at http://www.uwlax.edu/provost/academics/faculty.htm.
Conference Development Grants
Applications for UW System Conference Development Grants are due November 12 by email to Bill Cerbin, firstname.lastname@example.org. Grants of up to $1,000 are available to support workshops, seminars or conferences on teaching-related subjects, including meetings of faculty or staff in a particular discipline to discuss teaching issues raised by that discipline. This round of grants will fund activities that take place in Spring 2009 (January 1-June 30, 2009). Additional information and applications are available at http://www.uwlax.edu/provost/academics/faculty.htm.
UW-L has discontinued its subscription to COS ( a searchable database for grants opportunities) because of its very limited use and high cost. Federal and non-federal grant database lists can be found at http://www.uwlax.edu/grants/pages/sources/external.htm.
No-cost Time Extension on Grants
If you have a grant for which activities will extend beyond the timeline in the funded proposal, please complete a no-cost time extension form. The form can be found on the sidebar links of the Sponsored Research, Scholarly & Creative Activities website (http://www.uwlax.edu/grants/index.htm). The transmittal form must be completed eight weeks prior to the current expiration date of the funded project for all extramural funded grants including subcontracts with other institutions.
