1.  GRADING DISTRIBUTIONS

As you think about your grade distributions, remember that UW-L uses a system of seven letter grades- A, A/B, B, B/C, C, D, and F. An A/B is a 3.5 GPA (and so on) - so those mid range grades are somewhat different from plusses and minuses that many of us are used to.  There is no set scale for the percentage points that relate to the letter grades, so it may take a while for those of you used to plusses and minuses to get used to the varying distributions.  Many of us include our expectations in our syllabi.  This is a typical version.

          A = 93 - 100%                 A/B = 89 -  92%
          B = 83 -  88%                 B/C = 79 -  82%
          C = 70 -  78%                   D =   60 -  69%
F = any student whose score is lower than 50% of the highest score obtained will fail the class.

Last semester’s departmental distribution (upper division courses tend to be more lenient).

 2.  SCANTRON GRADING

SCANTRON scoring (general information)

Electronically scored exams (a.k.a scantrons). IT (Information Technology) services provides electronic scoring of exams via the red 'scantron' sheets. Scores can be e-mailed to you in addition to getting printed reports by filling in the appropriate sections of the "Enterprise Computing Systems Exam Request Form". Copies of the form are available in 103 Wing and are probably also in your department office. Exams may be dropped off at the IT Support Center (103 Wing) in a basket in the office M-F 7:30-4:30 and in a secure drop box just outside the office after hours. Exams are scored during regular office hours with a general turn around time of 4 hours for e-mailed scores, longer for the printed versions (the turnaround is often shorter). Student workers need to bring ID and permission slips to pick up or drop off exams.

3.  SUBMISSION OF END OF THE SEMESTER GRADES

All grades are now submitted electronically through AERIE.  This web access is available anywhere you have internet access. Internet Explorer is the preferred browser.  To log into AERIE, click on the “Faculty & Staff” menu item on the UWL Home Page. Click on the Eagle icon to access the AERIE login page. When you log into AERIE, using your UWL email ID and password*, you will see “Grade Submission” on the AERIE Main Menu. Click on that menu item and then “Final Grade Submission” in the next set of menu options.  Your courses will appear on your “Instructor Grade List” on the final day of your course. Click on the course ID to see your grade roster. After you add your grades, we recommend you go back to the AERIE Main Menu, select “Instructor Course List,” and the course you just graded. You will be able to see the grades you just added. You may want to print your class list and keep this copy in your records. If you use the NA grade (Not Active) for a student who never attended or stopped attending at some point in the semester, the NA date is a required field. Please click the drop down menu and choose a date that indicates the last evidence of attendance for the student. This feature allows us to comply with federal financial aid rules regarding students who unofficially withdraw from all of their classes. The NA grade automatically converts to an “F” when it is stored in the database. Incomplete forms are still required.  If you give a student an incomplete grade, please submit the incomplete form to the Office of Records and Registration by the grading deadline.  If you have questions about late grade submission, please contact Deb Peterson at 785-8578.  ITS created supporting documentation, which can be found at: http://www.uwlax.edu/itssupport/onlinehelp/aerie.htm There is both a video tutorial and a printable document detailing the instructions for on-line grading.

*If you are still using your default email password (last 4 numbers of your SSN and your month and date of birth) you are required to change the password to log into AERIE.  Directions to change your email password can be found at: http://itssupport.uwlax.edu/solutions/mainview.aspx?DocumentID=7619
