1. GETTING COURSE LISTS
2. MANIPULATING COURSE LISTS (for Excel or SPSS)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. COURSE LISTS:
There are two primary ways to get course lists.
1. You can go to the new system “AERIE” on the faculty website at http://www.uwlax.edu/faculty.htm and follow the instructions on how to access your list. *EASIEST! * BEST!
2. FROM SCANTRON EXAMS: You can also create class lists off of scantron exams if you give them. Be sure to give IT your email address with your first exam or you could even have students fill out a scantron (without an exam) in order to set up your list for a larger class. The resulting file will have names, numbers and exam score. You can import into Excel or SPSS.
IMPORTANT -- STUDENT ID NUMBERS – all students have a student ID number; however, you cannot post grades/scores with that full number. You can post by the last four-digits of that number. Hence, if you wish to post information, having course lists in spread sheets is a convenient way to create the 4-digit number or assign some form of posting number to the students. If you have a really small class (5 or less), first, bless your lucky stars. Second, don’t post with numbers – too easy to figure out.
2. MANIPULATING COURSE LISTS: If you wish to bring the information from class lists into Excel, another spreadsheet or SPSS, you can then enter results from exams, essays, papers, extra credit and the like.
The easiest way is the following….
1. From the AERIE system – cut and paste into an open Excel file – fiddle with margins as needed. For SPSS save the Excel file and then load into SPSS using the steps of “file” “open” and “data” – select for .xcl files.
Other ways load information into spreadsheets.
2. FROM THE EMAILED LISTS to EXCEL: From your email with the class list, go to file save as, and save the class list file to your computer. Then: 1) open it from within Excel (making sure to change the file type in the look up list to files - all types so you can see files with .txt extensions). 2). Excel will prompt you to specify comma delimited or fixed width. 3) Select DELIMITED width. The delimiters boxes that need to be checked are TAB and COMMA, the TEXT QUALIFIER is ". 4). Click FINISH and then names, the number of the semester in school - usually 1-8 and a letter indicating the college (e.g. L for liberal studies, B for business, A for arts & communication, H science and allied health, E for education) and major should appear in separate columns.
3. From the emailed lists to SPSS: 1). Go to “File” pull down and click on “Read Text Data” 2). Open the file (.txt extension) 3). Click No pre-defined format and click next. 4) Click Delimited and no variable names at top and click finish.
