2006 Distinguished Lecture in Biomechanics

Timothy E. Hewett, PhD, FACSM
"Preventing Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury in Young Athletes"
Friday, October 6, 2006, Port O' Call, Cartwright Center, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

Female athletes who participate in sports that require jumping and pivoting are four to six times more likely to sustain a knee ligament injury that male athletes participating in the same sports. The majority of ACL injuries occur by non-contact during landing from a jump or making a lateral pivot while running. Early intervention is thought to be important in reducing the number of female athletes sustaining these injuries. This free public lecture will discuss the effectiveness of components (dynamic balance and strengthening) of a knee injury prevention program specifically designed for females.

Dr. Hewett is an international expert in injury prevention and ACL injury in female athletes. He is the director of the Sports Medicine Biodynamics Center at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Hewett is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and holds professorships in several departments at the University of Cincinnati, University of Kentucky and the University of Toledo Medical Center.

Dr. Hewett has over 100 peer reviewed publications, texts and book chapters ad has been awarded several prestigious research awards.

This free lecture and reception are made possible by the generous support of the UW-L Foundation and the College of Science and Health.
