Allowed Number of Attempts
The
number of opportunities to correctly enter a transaction into the system. The
TALON system allows three attempts.
Canceled Class
A
section canceled by the academic department due to low enrollment or lack of an
instructor.
Change Sections
The
action code (drop down menu) selected when wishing to change from one section of
a course to another section of the same course. If the new section is closed or
conflicts with your schedule, the first section will not be dropped.
Closed Class
A
course that has met its enrollment capacity.
Continuing Education & Extension
A
UW-L program that primarily offers courses off campus for professionals. Courses
are identified by 700 level section numbers.
Course on Hold
Enrollment
in the course is being controlled by the academic department. Contact the
instructor/academic department for information.
Concurrent Course
Required
enrollment in two courses in the same semester. The most common concurrent
occurrence is a lecture/lab course. If any part of a linked concurrent courses
is closed, the system will not add the section that remains open.
Duplicate Enrollment
Student
attempts to register for the same course twice.
English 050
A
fundamental English course needed if ACT scores or Wisconsin Placement test
scores require placement into this course or if the scores are not on file.
Ineligible to Return
When
the student's grade point average doesn't meet minimum standards of the
university to be allowed to continue.
Instructor Consent
Written
approval, using a blue override form, signed by the instructor and department
chair, is required to enroll in a course. Completed
form should be brought to the Office of Records and Registration, 117
Graff
Main Hall.
International Student
The
system will not allow an international student to drop any course that will drop
the total number of credits below 12. You must contact the Office of
International Education, 116 GMH, if you intend to drop below 12 credits (9
graduate credits).
Major Restriction
A
block placed in the system, which will not allow registration activities until
the office placing the restriction is contacted.
Mth 050/Mth 051
A
fundamental mathematics course needed if ACT scores or Wisconsin Placement test
scores require placement into this course or if the scores are not on file.
Minor Restriction
A
warning to inform students that an administrative office needs to be contacted.
Registration will be allowed. This type of restriction should be addressed
before it turns into a major restriction (see major restriction).
Mother’s Maiden Name
All
students are required to enter their mother’s maiden name to access Web
registration for the first time. This security feature is required to change
your PIN number on the TALON system.
Not Admitted to Program
Registering
for a course where acceptance into an academic program (i.e., Business,
Education, etc.) is required prior to enrolling in a course for that program.
Contact the dean's Office of the major offering the course for more information.
Override Forms
The
TALON system will not allow you to register for courses that require special
permission of the instructor, department chair and/or dean. Permission needs to
be obtained on override forms that are available in department offices.
PIN
The Personal Identification Number is a 4-digit number used
for accessing the TALON system. For first-time users, the PIN is the month and
day of your birth (i.e., birth date = May 12, PIN is 0512). You will be required
to change your PIN on your first entry. The new number cannot be the same four
numbers (e.g. 9999) or the original PIN number. If you have forgotten your PIN,
call the registration help‑line at (608) 785-8951.
Placement Scores
ACT
and Wisconsin State Placement Test scores must be on file prior to entering the
University to determine math, English and foreign language placement.
Prerequisite
A
requirement that needs completion before enrolling in a higher-level course.
Prerequisites are not listed in the course timetable; please see the catalog for
course prerequisites.
Record in Use
An
administrative office is completing maintenance on your student record, which
prevents access. Contact the
registration help‑line at (608) 785-8951 to clear the record.
Record is Locked
This
may occur if your student ID number and/or PIN number were not entered correctly
within three attempts or if the TALON system failed during your active session.

Student Athlete
Student ID
The
nine-digit number used as a security measure to identify the student
registering.
Year in School
Some
programs or courses require a certain student classification to enroll in a
course.
