EDM 301/501 Cr. 3
Selection and Evaluation of Instructional
Materials
Principles and methods of evaluation and selection of print
and non-print materials. Emphasis on standard selection sources;
building an adequate collection of learning materials;
establishing of selection policies. Offered Sem. I.
EDM 320/520 Cr. 1-3
Storytelling
This course is designed to assist students in the development
of storytelling skills through the investigation of historic and
ethnic storytelling traditions, the analysis of oral story
presentation and supervised practice of varied storytelling
techniques. A wide variety of story types and telling practices
will be demonstrated for and used by participants. The
connection between curriculum and the oral tradition will be a
major emphasis of the course. Offered occasionally.
EDM 335/535 Cr. 3
Introduction to Cataloging and Classification
Techniques of bibliographic form and their applications,
including simple classification and cataloging of print and
non-print materials. Includes assigned laboratory work.
Prerequisite: EDM 319. Offered Sem. II.
EDM 340/540 Cr. 3
Children’s Literature
A basic course in literature for children of the primary
grades through middle school. Special emphasis is given to
picture books, easy books, storybooks, informational materials,
folklore and poetry. Modern trends in the literature for this
age level are highlighted. A short unit on censorship is
included. Non-print material is used selectively. Prerequisite:
three credits in 200-level English courses and junior or senior
standing. (Not open for credit in the English minor except for
elementary/middle education minors.) (Undergraduate level ross-listed
with ENG; may only earn credit in EDM or ENG.)
EDM 341/541 Cr. 3
Adolescent Literature
Survey of literature suitable for reading by adolescent boys
and girls. Primarily for middle/secondary education students.
Prerequisite: three credits in 200-level English courses. (Not
open for credit in the English minor except for education
minors.) (Undergraduate level cross-listed with ENG; may only
earn credit in EDM or ENG.)
EDM 342/542 Cr. 3
Visual Literacy
A major emphasis is on enhancing and expanding perception.
Experiences, discussions and practice in exploring, recognizing,
sorting, manipulating and interpreting visual materials and
qualities are provided. There is clear recognition that the
visual and verbal experiences must interact and support one
another. Offered occasionally.
EDM 402/602 Cr. 3
Instructional Technology
An extensive review of the theory, operation, and utilization
of the electronic media used in education. Copyright
considerations, censorship of non-print media, and selection of
equipment and materials are discussed. Many practical skills
needed by the media specialist are demonstrated. Prerequisite:
EDM 319 and EDM 301/501. Concurrent enrollment in 301/501
allowed. Offered Sem. I.
EDM 611 Cr. 1
Technology in Education I: Introduction
In this first course of four, students will be introduced to
the concept of technology in education. Coursework requirements
include application to the workplace setting and communication
via technology. The key concept of this course is an online
course management system. Prerequisite: admission to Learning
Community Program.
EDM 612 Cr. 1
Technology in Education II: Exploration
In this second course of four, students will explore the
concept of technology in education. Course requirements include
application to the workplace setting and communication via
technology. The key concepts of this course include the role of
technology in education and exploring distance library services.
Prerequisite: EDM 611; admission to Learning Community Program.
EDM 461/661 Cr. 3
General Reference
A broad survey of general reference services, sources and
problems. Emphasis on subject areas of social sciences,
humanities, sciences and technology. Prerequisite: EDM 301/501
and 402/602 or concurrent enrollment. Offered Sem. I.
EDM 470/670 Cr. 1-3
Symposium in Educational Media
Studies in education of interest to specific groups. Varying
topics will be offered at intervals with a specific title
assigned to each. Prerequisite: junior standing and admission to
teacher education. Repeatable for credit — maximum 6.
Departmental option for Pass/Fail grading.
EDM 710 Cr. 3
Preparation of Instructional Materials
Design and preparation of instructional materials for use by
teachers and media specialists in schools, business and
industry. Presents advanced techniques for the utilization of
mounting, lettering, computer graphics and other illustration
techniques for such final products as paste-ups, transparencies,
slide-tape series and displays. A laboratory fee is charged.
Materials produced from individually exercised options are
retained by the students. Offered Summer Session, even-numbered
years.

Communications Media Design
Analysis of the step-by-step approach to educational design.
Instructional development models that consist of describing,
implementing, and evaluating educational prototypes are
employed. Project includes the preparation and development of a
systematically designed unit of instruction.
EDM 713 Cr. 1
Technology in Education III: Integration
In this third of four courses, students will integrate
technology in education. Coursework requirements include
application to the workplace setting and communication via
technology. In addition to continuing the concepts from
Technology in Education I & II, the key concepts for this course
include: information technology, instructional technology, and
technology tools for the action research process. Prerequisite:
EDM 611 and 612; admission to Learning Community Program.
EDM 714 Cr. 1
Technology in Education IV: Action
In this fourth course of four, students will take action with regard to technology in education. Coursework requirements include application to the workplace setting and communication via technology. In addition to continuing the concepts from Technology in Education I, II, & III, the key concepts of this course include: informational technology, instructional technology, and technology safety. Prerequisite: EDM 611, 612, and 713; admission to Learning Community Program.

Television Production
Designing instructional television programs. Practical
experience in the production of single and multi-camera
instructional videotapes.
EDM 740 Cr. 2-3
Library Media Applications of Microcomputers
Microcomputer based operations such as circulation systems,
catalog systems, data base searching, and applications software
are covered. Also included are the selection of software and
hardware, and the role of the library as a computer resource
center. Prerequisite: EDM 335/535. Offered Summer Session,
even-numbered years.

Introduction to Educational Research
Emphasis on the concepts and current processes associated
with historical, descriptive, and experimental studies. The
identification and examination of print and non-print material
sources used in retrieving information will be studied. Practice
will be given in reviewing and critiquing current, published
research studies and in developing a proposal for a research
study.

School Media Supervisor
Role of the school media supervisor, director, coordinator,
or consultant on state, regional, district levels. How this
person functions in educational administration, curriculum
development, centralized acquisition and processing centers.
Principles and problems involved. Offered Summer Session,
odd-numbered years.
EDM 773 Cr. 3
Current Trends in Literature for Children and Young Adults
A course designed to study new and recent trends in
literature for children and young adults. Thematic approach for
discussion of emerging trends such as sexism; cultural and
ethnic backgrounds in books for children and young adults;
troublesome titles; and censorship. Prerequisite: EDM or ENG
340/540 and/or EDM or ENG 341/541.

Directed readings or presentation of material not available
in formal departmental courses under the supervision of an
assigned staff member. Repeatable for credit — maximum 4.

EDM 799 Cr. 2-6
Terminal Projects
As the culminating experience in a graduate program, the
student is given three alternative opportunities: 1) Complete a
practicum in a library/instructional media center; 2) produce an
expressive or instructional program of professional proportions;
3) select a problem for individual study and write a seminar
paper. In options 2 and 3, the student will develop a
performance contract with a project committee. A written
narrative may be required as a companion to the project.
