Graduate programs at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse are offered in each of the four colleges that comprise the university -- the College of Business Administration; the College of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation; the College of Liberal Studies; and the College of Science and Allied Health.
The College of Business Administration offers a Master's of Business Administration (M.B.A.)program that is fully accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.
The College of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and the College of Science and Allied Health offer an array of programs that have led to UW-L's reputation for statewide and national excellence in the biological sciences and numerous fields related to health, exercise and sport science, and recreation management. The College of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) offers graduate degrees in adult fitness/cardiac rehabilitation, exercise and sport science (with options in human performance, sport administration, pedagogy, and special physical education), therapeutic recreation, recreation management, and school health education. In addition, the College of HPER offers Wisconsin's only nationally accredited Master's of Public Health in Community Health Education.
The College of Science and Allied Health's graduate program in biology has developed an excellent reputation for preparing graduates for professional advancement in scientific and research careers or Ph.D. studies; students may choose from curricular emphases in biology/micro-biology, nurse anesthesiology, and clinical microbiology. In addition, the Master's of Science in Physical Therapy degree has recently been approved as UW-L's newest graduate-level program.
The School of Education, which is part of the College of Liberal Studies, offers several graduate programs. Graduate degree programs in reading, special education, and school psychology serve school districts throughout the State of Wisconsin. In addition, the School of Education offers the only graduate degree in College Student Development and Administration in the state and a flexible Master's of Education in Professional Development degree that provides students an opportunity to specially tailor a program of study to their academic and career interests.
A hallmark of the graduate experience at UW-L is the opportunity for close interactions with faculty through course work, collaboration in research endeavors, and numerous other opportunities for independent studies, practica, internships, and other scholarly pursuits. Thank you for your interest in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse! This catalog is designed to familiarize readers with the numerous graduate degree programs and courses offered by our university.
UW-La Crosse is a public institution of higher education governed by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents. While its initial mission in 1909 was to prepare teachers, UW-La Crosse has expanded programs to include specialized degrees in education, allied health and business disciplines, exercise and sport science, health education and promotion, recreation, and the liberal arts and sciences. Students may select from 21 graduate programs, many of which have a counterpart among the nearly 80 undergraduate majors, minors and concentrations. Continuing education courses and international opportunities further enhance the UW-La Crosse experience.
Graduates of UW-La Crosse master's degree programs can be found throughout the world in positions of responsibility and leadership. Our faculty strive to meet the high standards of scholarly achievement and professional development for which our graduates are known.
This catalog does not establish or constitute a contract between UW-La Crosse and its students. Instead, it provides descriptive and summary information outlining university rules, regulations, course listings, and degree programs. It is important for students to become acquainted with UW-La Crosse requirements and regulations, and to continue to keep informed about them while they are enrolled. In compiling our catalog, we have used the most current and accurate information available to us at this time. However, we reserve the right to change any of the information in this catalog at any time and without giving prior notice. When the UW System or UW- La Crosse campus deletes or revises any of the information in this catalog, the changes take effect as soon as they are approved. The faculty and administration of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse believe that it is the task of the university to make people safe for ideas, not to make ideas safe for people. Beyond formal lectures and laboratory experiences, the University provides opportunities for the presentation of diverse views to stimulate thought and discussion in the University community. It is the responsibility of the University to strive, over a period of time, to attain a diversified presentation of ideas by people who are engaged in research and social dialogue. Thus, the University seeks to increase student exposure to the ever-expanding world of ideas. In a democratic society we can do no less. No one shall be compelled to attend or listen. All must be free to hear. The appearance of any particular speaker on campus implies neither approval nor disapproval by the administration or the faculty of what that speaker says.
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is totally committed to providing equal educational and employment opportunity regardless of gender, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, disability, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital or parental status. Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance by way of grant, contract, or loan. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is similar in its prohibition of discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of physical or mental handicap. Equal educational opportunely includes: admission, recruitment, extracurricular programs and activities, housing facilities, access to course offerings, counseling and testing, financial assistance, employment, health and insurance services and athletics. Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that is unlawful and contrary to the fundamental standards of a university community.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of handicap. Ongoing efforts are being made to ensure that facilities and programs are accessible to all students with disabilities.
Direct student services to those with physical or learning disabilities include, but are not limited to: classroom notetakers, tutors, class preregistration, taped textbooks, academic advising, individual/group counseling and equipment loan. Specific requests for assistance or information should be directed to the coordinator of the Disability Resource Services office, 165 Murphy Library.
Both disabled and non-disabled students are eligible to join Students Advocating Potential Ability (SAPA), a campus organization formed (1) to give academic and social support to students with disabilities; (2) to facilitate awareness of these students needs; and (3) to support the basic rights of all students and to resist discrimination in any form for or against people with disabilities.
