Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Minor. Open to students in all schools and colleges within the university. Teacher certification programs: 22 credits. All other majors: 26 credits.

TSL/ESL 300 Introduction to TESOL (prerequisites: ENG 110; CST 110; and three credits from the following courses: EFN 205, ERS 100, SOC 225)

ANT 350 Language and Culture or CST 332 Intercultural Communication

ENG 332 Modern English Grammars

ENG 401 Introduction to Linguistics (previously FLG 475, prerequisites: ENG 332 or 202-level foreign language)

Multicultural/International requirement, 3 credits from the following courses:
       PSY 382 Cross-Cultural Psychology
       PSY 280 Cross-Cultural Development
       ANT/SOC 480 Comparative Sociology/Anthropology
       EFN 486 Multicultural Education

Additional requirements:

*ESL certification, not K-12, for Elementary, Elementary/Middle, and Middle/Secondary Education; 7 credits:
       SPE 431 Language Development & Disorders
       2 - 3 credits from the following courses:
                RDG 320 Emergent Literacy
                ENG 334 Language Studies for Secondary Teachers
                C-I 467 Teaching a Foreign Language, or 
                RDG 426 Teaching Children with Reading Difficulties
       1 - 2 credits from the following courses:
                SPE 490 Teaching Exceptional Children and Youth: Field Placement (taken concurrently with RDG 426) 
                TSL/ESL 450 TESOL National/International Intern Program

*K-12 ESL certification for Elementary/Middle Education, 7 credits:
      SPE 431 Language Development & Disorders
      3 credits from the following courses: 
                ENG 334 Language Studies for Secondary Teachers

Requirements for all TESOL minors: proficiency in a foreign language demonstrated through completion of 102-level course work or equivalent experience, and suitable proficiency in English as determined by the TESOL coordinator.

 *TESOL Minors in ESL (public school) certification programs must also take C-I 463 TESOL Methods and student teach at appropriate levels.
