HOW TO USE THE TIMETABLE

READING THE FALL TIMETABLE

The timetable is organized alphabetically by department with graduate and undergraduate courses listed together.  Courses are listed by section, which means that the same course is offered at different times, days, and by different instructors. You will register for your desired class using the 3-letter department abbreviation, the course number, and the section number. Class begin and end times are listed in military time. All classes are taught by either faculty or instructional academic staff.  “Staff” is listed if an instructor has not been assigned.

The timetable does not list course prerequisites.  Please refer to the university catalog course descriptions for prerequisite information. The TALON system will not allow you to register in a course for which you do not meet the prerequisite.

Some classes have special course fees or require purchases. Those that require students to spend more than $20 are so noted.

 SLASH COURSES

are undergraduate/graduate courses that are only open to juniors who have earned 60 credits, seniors, and graduate students. Slash courses are designated in the schedule with an * (asterisk).

 GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES

are courses that fulfill General Education requirements (see the undergraduate catalog), and are designated in the schedule with an  ^  (insertion mark).

 WRITING EMPHASIS COURSES

are courses that contain a strong writing element.  Two writing emphasis courses are required as part of General Education (see the undergraduate catalog).  These courses are designated in the schedule with an  ! (exclamation mark) and also listed on pages 21-22 of this timetable.  All sections of the same course may not be writing emphasis.  Some departments incorporate significant amounts of writing across the curriculum instead of designating specific sections. See the catalog for the list of these departments.

DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSES

are courses that either originate on our campus and include other receive sites, or originate from another campus and UW-L is a receive site. Some courses are taught by interactive television; others are internet-based. Distance education courses are designated in the schedule with a + (plus sign).
