As part of their remuneration and to facilitate their involvement in the hall community, Residence Hall Directors employed at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse are provided with either a one or two bedroom apartment in their hall. Apartments are furnished, including contemporary furniture, appliances, microwave, telephones, and voice mail service. Local phone service with special long-distance rates for personal calls is provided. Laundry machines for Hall Directors are either in or outside of their apartments for personal use. Assistant Hall Directors recieve an allocation of laundry money to be used in the hall laundry rooms.

The apartment is viewed as the Hall Director or Assistant Hall Director's home. However, there are some guidelines for the use of those apartments. The size tends to limit how many individuals can comfortably live in the apartment. Use is therefore limited to the Residence Hall Director and his or her family or domestic partner. In the past, some Directors with children have been willing to work around the constraints of limited space, while others have found the apartment too small. Residence Hall Directors are encouraged to have friends and family visit. These visits should be limited to a maximum of a one week stay at any one time. Exceptions can be discussed with the Director’s Area Coordinator. Hall Directors, only, are allowed to have a cat, fish and other small caged animals (up to twenty pounds). Approval from the Area Coordinator must be granted prior to arrival and a cleaning deposit submitted.
