Internship Guidelines
PURPOSE
The internship experience is a very important aspect of the Sport Administration program and provides students with an intensive, supervised, first-hand exposure to the operation of a sport enterprise. The internship is a culminating experience for both thesis and non-thesis students -- an opportunity to apply knowledge and skill obtained through course work and other experiences. All course work and the written comprehensive exam must be completed before the internship.
REQUIREMENTS
The minimum time requirement for an internship is 400 hours. The
recommended internship design is 35 hours/week for 12 weeks. However,
the recommended time requirements from the University can be negotiated
with the internship site. To be eligible to register for ESS 788 --
Internship in Sport Administration, a student must have completed all
course work, earned a GPA of 3.0 or better in all graduate work and
attain the approval of the Internship Coordinator (otherwise known as
the Advisor). Some internships are paid.
SITE SELECTION
All internship sites must be approved by the Internship Coordinator/Program Director before a student may begin his/her duties. The Internship Coordinator will work with the student in determining a site because careful selection is important in obtaining professional goals.
If a student desires to apply to a new site (one that has not yet been approved by the Department of Exercise & Sport Science), contact the Internship Coordinator for policies and procedures.
Site selection should begin at least six months before the intended internship starting date. It is the student's responsibility to send out letters of application and resumes. It is suggested that letters and resumes be approved by the Internship Coordinator before being sent to a prospective site.
APPLICATION PROCESS & INTERNSHIP MATERIALS
This internship packet contains the application materials and procedures. It is recommended that students review these materials with the Internship Coordinator/Program Director. Packet includes the following:
- Checklist (Intern completes before internship)
- Contract (Intern & site complete)
- Intern Hours Log (Intern completes & supervisor signs)
- Site Questionnaire (Sites complete)
- Internship Evaluation (Intern completes)
- Intern Evaluation (Supervisor completes)
Once a student has decided on an internship site and has completed the necessary paperwork, that individual has a professional obligation to complete the internship.
EVALUATION
Each student will be evaluated during the internship experience. The student's supervisor from the sponsoring organization will complete the student evaluation form and submit it to the student's University Internship Coordinator/Program Director.
