Welcome to the Department of Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation at UW-L
We offer degrees in both Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation at the Bachelors and Masters level. Recreation Management students are trained to eventually assume middle management positions in government recreation/parks, for-profit enterprises, tourism businesses, or non-profit recreation organizations. Therapeutic Recreation students become Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists who are trained to help individuals with physical, cognitive, and/or behavioral disabilities. They assume positions in hospitals, geriatric centers, drug rehabilitation centers, correctional institutions, and community centers.
The department’s undergraduate degree programs have been nationally accredited since 1988 and have received high marks for not only achieving, but also exceeding many accreditation standards set by the Council on Accreditation (National Recreation and Park Association). The department’s core philosophy is to provide a student-centered, learning-by-doing educational program that instills both knowledge and enthusiasm. More specifically, graduates are to be instilled with not only educational knowledge, but also the enthusiasm to become an innovator and creator who truly understands the ever-changing recreational needs of the public.
