First Free Evangelical Church- Disabilities Ministry

The First Free Evangelical Church is looking for volunteers to be “Buddies” to children with special needs during Sunday services.

The Buddy is paired with a child who has special needs to support them during the children’s service activities while the parents attend the adult services and fellowship hour. The children in need of a Buddy vary in age from 4 years old on up with varying special needs such as Down syndrome, autism, ADD, RAD, ADHD, physical handicapping conditions, etc. Many of the children have existing IEPs at school and often have aides or support during the week to help them succeed in school. The Buddy paired up with a child who has special needs will meet the family first and receive more information about the child’s needs and expectations of the child and Buddy during the children’s services. We would like to have Buddies in place for the upcoming school year when the children’s services resume. There may also be a need for help during Wednesday evening Family Room Live and possibly during a few Fridays per month for a respite care type evening offered to children with special needs and their siblings. We are looking for volunteers who have a heart for serving people with special needs. It would be helpful if you have a background in special education or experience working with people with special needs.

Family Resources

Family Resources is a non-profit organization that offers parent education and support.  Families and caregivers of young children are supported, nurtured, strengthened and encouraged as they journey through parenthood and the joys and challenges of caring for a child.  We offer play groups, support groups, classes, workshops and much more.

Volunteers are a vital part of our mission.  We have a wonderful and supportive environment to learn and grow both personally and professionally.  Many students come back year after year!!  There are many opportunities for volunteers, whether you want to volunteer just one time or for the whole year.  We also have many unpaid internships available in the Fall, Spring and Summer.  Some of the opportunities we have include:

Play Shoppe and Parent Connection-do you enjoy playing with children? What a wonderful way to spend a morning and volunteer at the same time!  We need volunteers that are able to come in a half an hour early to help set up and stay afterwards to help put everything away.  If you are only available for part of the time, that is ok too-just let us know.  Our groups meet from 9:30-11  Tuesday through Friday.  We have 2 Play Shoppes in La Crosse and 1 in the Holmen/Onalaska area.  Volunteers can catch a ride with our parent educator.

Workshops and Classes-If you enjoy caring for children, this is for you!  We need volunteers to help with childcare while the children’s parents attend the workshops and classes.

Receptionist-Are you a people person?  Do you enjoy answering phones and meeting new people? We’re always looking for people to volunteer at our front desk.  We are looking for someone who would like to commit to at least 2 hours per week.

Clerical-Whether you enjoy typing, putting together pamphlets or any other miscellaneous task, we can always use help.  Put you skill to use!!  In the past volunteers have job-shadowed in Administration and our Parent Education departments.  Students get a chance to see what our world is all about, and we get help with projects and reporting.

Toy Cleaning-We offer a toy lending library plus a children’s room full of fun toys to play with.  Volunteers who help us clean our toys are always very much appreciated. Hours can be very flexible.

For more information about volunteering, call 784-8125  and ask for Deb.  Help make a difference in the lives of children in the Coulee Region!!

Horse Sense for Special Riders

My name is Magen Duffy, I am the volunteer coordinator for a program called HorseSence For Special Riders.  We are a non-profit organization that works with children and adults through the work of animal therapy.  We are looking for many new volunteers to help out.  It can be a small or large commitment, and we still have opportunities to volunteer this spring, and if spring will not work we have three more sessions to volunteer for throughout the year.  Our spring orientation is Tuesday April 18th.

I was hoping that you would be able to pass along this information to any students looking to volunteer, or who may be required to volunteer.  If you could spread the word about our volunteer needs or post the information on your job/volunteer board that would be greatly appreciated.
