Student Teaching / Intern Important Dates for Fall 2012
Student Teaching/Intern MANDATORY Information Session for Fall 2012 (Attend one session)
September 27, 2011 - 3:00-4:30 p.m., 339 Cartwright Center or
September 28, 2011 - Noon-1:30 p.m., 339 Cartwright Center
Student Teaching Application Day for Fall 2012--Completed application packets are due
October 11, 2011 - Anytime between 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 259 Cartwright Center
Intern Application Day for Fall 2012
February 15, 2012 - Materials are due in 145 Graff Main Hall.
$100 Registration Deposit
Your deadline for payment is April 13, 2012. If you have a concern about meeting this deadline, please make an appointment with the Director of Field Experience to discuss your concern.
Criminal Background Check
Please complete the online criminal background check during the month of July 2012 for your fall placement(s). All Criminal Background Checks must be done prior to August 3, 2012. Read the instructions on the Field Experience page of the website found at www.uwlax.edu/soe/forms/index.html.
Instructions to complete the online Criminal Background Check:
- Go to www.CertifiedBackground.com and click on “Students.”
- In the Package Code box, enter package code: NI71. (Capitals N and I, and numbers 7 and 1).
- Select a method of payment: Visa, MasterCard, or money order.
- Print out a copy of your background check for your own file. We do not need your password, as we have a campus password that allows us to view your results once you have completed the process.
- Write down and file your password for future reference, in the event you need another copy of your background check.
- If you have any questions about the online criminal background check process, please contact Certified Background Inc. directly at 1-888-723-4263.
Medical Records
Official documentation of your Hepatitis B immunization record and TB test reading must be submitted to the Office of Field Experience by August 3, 2012. Please note that the TB test must be performed within 90 days before your student teaching/intern start date. Schedule your TB test and reading between June 25-August 1, 2012, to meet the deadline.

Extracurricular Activity Letter of Request
Required for all teacher candidates who desire involvement in extracurricular activities while student teaching. Send a letter to the Director of Field Experience requesting permission to participate in a specific activity PRIOR to accepting any extracurricular responsibility.
Student Teaching / Intern Orientation Day--MANDATORY for all teacher candidates with student teaching or intern placements in the Fall of 2012
Friday, August 17, 2012, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Valhalla B, Cartwright Center, UW-L Campus
- Dress in professional attire.
- Registration is from 8:30-9:00 a.m., Valhalla B, Cartwright Center.
- All student teachers and interns will receive information on policies, procedures, requirements, seminars, and special meetings.
- All student teachers and interns will receive training on the evaluation forms, as well as the required portfolio.
- All student teachers and interns will meet with their university supervisors and seminar leaders.
Early Childhood Education Fall 2012 Placement Dates (two eight-week placements)
First Site: August 27-October 19
Second Site: October 22-December 14
Fall 2012 Teacher Employment Seminar--REQUIRED for ALL current student teachers and interns
October 22, 2012, 8:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Valhalla, Cartwright Center-- with Career Services
- Student teachers and interns will receive information on certification, graduate work, and job search strategies.
- Student teachers and interns will sign-up for their UW-L commencement ceremony and order their graduation gowns, announcements, etc.
- Student teachers and interns will be able to conduct business in various campus offices, as necessary.
Teacher Education Program Evaluation--REQUIRED only for December 2012 graduates
Friday, December 14, 2012 (Save the date—Completed Online)
- Student teachers and interns evaluate the UW-L Teacher Education Program.
- Student Teaching Seminars--REQUIRED, UW-L Campus
- All student teachers and interns attend student teaching seminars to share and critically examine their respective teaching pedagogy, classroom management, assessment strategies and materials, professional development, and classroom experiences.
- Many student teaching seminars are held from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on six separate Wednesdays, and other are scheduled for alternate days and times. Check on WINGS for your specific schedule.
