Professional Development Schools

A New Way of Building Schools

Children Waving The La Crosse and Onalaska School Districts and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Teacher Education Unit seek to create a network of university, school and community partnerships enhancing the quality of education for PK-16 students. We believe:

"The power to reinvent teaching and schooling is located in neither the university nor the school, but in the collaborative work of the two." - Cochran-Smith(1991)

"Professional development schools (PDS) are organizations that cannot be created by either public schools or universities acting alone. They grow out of and depend upon the collaboration for their very existence." - Robinson & Darling-Hammond(1994)

Primary Purposes

Exemplary instruction and other educational experiences for PK-12 students
Preparation of teachers and other school based educators
Professional development of teachers and other school based educators
Applied inquiry designed to improve practice

US Department of Education FIPSE comprehensive program (http://www.ed.gov/programs/fipsecomp/index.html)
Other possibilities include LEA Title II money, UW System Title II money (for certain professional development aspects of the PDS)
