2008 UW System Lesson Study
Training Grant
Studying Liberal Education Learning Outcomes in Introductory Courses

Welcome

The 2008 Lesson Study Training Grants support UW instructors to carry out lesson studies to investigate essential liberal education outcomes in introductory courses. Grant recipients are expected to

  1. Participate in two (2) training activities—a tutorial or workshop to learn how to do lesson study and an online tutorial later in 2008 to learn how to write the final report.
  2. Carry out a lesson study in which your team designs, teaches, studies and revises a class lesson and then the following semester teaches, studies and revises the lesson a second time.
  3. Document your lesson study in an online scholarly report.
  4. Each team member completes a mid-year survey and final lesson study experience questionnaire as part of an ongoing study of the project.

Focus

2008 lesson study projects focus on the design and study of lessons that address essential liberal education learning outcomes in introductory courses. For purposes of this grant essential liberal learning outcomes are those proposed by the Association of American Colleges and Universities and adopted by the UW System Liberal Education Initiative.

Training

Training Workshops. In January 2008 training workshops were held at UW River Falls, UW Whitewater and UW Platteville. The workshop introduces the basic principles and practices of lesson study, and examines how you can use lesson study to improve your own teaching and also contribute to knowledge about teaching in your field.

Training Module. Instructors not able to attend a workshop should complete a training module that orients you to lesson study practices. After providing background on lesson study, the module offers strategies to help you get more from the lesson study process.

Mid-Year Survey

Instructors complete a Mid-Year Survey after your team has done its first iteration of lesson study (i.e., after you have designed, taught, observed and revised the lesson for the first time). The survey provides information about your initial lesson study experiences. Your feedback is used to improve project training materials and practices. Link to Mid-Year Survey.

The Final Report

The final report scholarly work in which you document both the lesson you developed and your study of the lesson. There is a specific format for the report and you will post it online, adding to a growing collection of college lesson studies. Read Instructions for Submitting Your Final Report.

Writing and Submitting Your Final Lesson Study Report. his module reviews the purpose, contents and format of the Final Report. Learn how to prepare and submit the Final Report using KEEP Toolkit and start composing your report.

Final Questionnaire

Instructors complete a questionnaire at the end of the project about their lesson study experience.

Additional Resources

The Lesson Study Project website and the College Lesson Study Blog contain articles, tools, an online lesson study guide, examples of completed lesson studies, and more. If you are unfamiliar with lesson study you might take 20 minutes to read our brief introduction or review the Online Guide. You may be interested in a podcast interviews we recorded with Catherine Lewis and Makoto Yoshida, noted experts on lesson study. Funding

Funding for the CLSP comes from the UWS Office of Professional & Instructional Development (OPID). In 2008 the UW-La Crosse and UW Stout provided additional funds to support their lesson study teams.
