The purpose of the SSP Childcare Program is to provide quality childcare for the children of Students of the Self-Sufficiency Program

The SSP Childcare Program seeks to:

  • Offer a positive and supportive environment for our children

  • Provide a safe, secure, and comfortable environment

  • Continue open communication with parents

operation and hours
The SSP Childcare Program is set up to care for children of all ages. The Program will operate at UW-La Crosse on Tuesday nights from 6:00-9:00, and at the Hamilton Family Learning Center on Wednesday nights from 5:00 to 7:00 and Thursday nights from 4:00 to 7:00.  The childcare program will run during the course of the Self-Sufficiency Program

program goals
Our goal is to provide a safe environment for individual activities during the hours the parents are in class

arrival and departure procedures

  • Parents are required to accompany their children and to completely sign their child in and out of the childcare area at each arrival and departure

  • Please take the child to a volunteer at each arrival, and inform a volunteer when the child departs

  • Children may not be dropped off or picked up at the door, and should be accompanied to and from the Center by an adult

  • If the child is to be picked up by someone other than the person dropping the child off clearly show this on the Sign-In Sheet as it is our practice to release children only to the person shown to be picking the child up that day

grievance policy
If at any time you have a question or concern regarding the care given at the center, please speak first with the program’s coordinator.  If your question or concern has not been properly addressed, you may speak with the Directors of SSP

evaluations
Once a semester you will have the opportunity to formally evaluate our program.  Our staff will set our evaluation date for late in each semester and then use the evaluation data to set goals for the upcoming semester.  If you have a concern or a compliment, you do not need to wait until the evaluation.  Please feel free to state a concern at any time

discipline
We believe that if kids are actively engaged in suitable activities, the need for discipline will be minimal.  Physical discipline of any kind is considered unacceptable

If a child has two incidents of being disruptive such that the well being of other children is negatively affected (biting, hitting, etc.) and/or refuses to respond to the direction of the SSP Childcare Program staff, the child will not be allowed to return to the program until the situation has been discussed with the program coordinator and the behavior has improved

Children Learn Through Play

The various kinds of play by young children are effective vehicles for promoting learning.  Children's spontaneous play provides opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and manipulation that are essential for constructing knowledge.  Play contributes to the development of representational thought.  A child expresses and represents his or her ideas, thoughts, and feelings when engaged in symbolic play.  During play a child learns to deal with feelings, to interact with others, to resolve conflicts, and to gain a sense of competence.  Perhaps most important, it is through play that children develop their imaginations and creativity.

Children's play also provides opportunities for children to practice spontaneously in a variety of situations the newly acquired skill or knowledge. This self-initiated practice is part of the process of inquiry during play.  Children examine and refine their learning in light of the feedback they receive from the environment and other people.  Children are naturally interested in participating in activities that strengthen their skills and deepen their understanding of concepts.
