Awards Sponsored ByThe Sigma Tau Gamma FoundationEmmet Ellis "CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD" A chapter must submit the enclosed application form to be eligible for the Ellis award. Report scholarship data for the Spring semester (or quarter) of the previous year, the Fall semester (or quarter) of the current academic year and the current semester (or quarter) if possible. Applications must be signed by the chapter advisor and Greek Advisor (IFC advisor, student activities director, dean or associate dean of students, etc.). Applications with missing or forged signatures (we will conduct a telephone check) will be disqualified. Criteria include chapter size and scholastic success relative to the system average and the all men's average. There are four winning places. The top chapter will receive a $ 100 library grant. W.T. Hembree "NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY AWARD" The W.T. Hembree National Philanthropy Award is given to the chapters that support, to the greatest measure, the national philanthropies of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. The national philanthropies are BACCHUS of the U.S. Inc. and Books For Kids. The competition is based upon donations actually received by the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation for BACCHUS, and/or by the number of new children's books donated to the Foundation for the Books For Kids community service program. There are four winning places. Hembree award projects may also qualify chapters for the Robert Nagel Jones Charitable Projects Award. BACCHUS is an international student-based movement for the prevention of alcohol abuse by college students. BACCHUS is not an abolitionist movement. Rather, its goal is to teach and promote the responsible use of beverage alcohol by those who choose to use it. Contact the Headquarters office for more information about how you can support or start a BACCHUS chapter on your campus. Robert Nagel Jones "CHARITABLE PROJECTS AWARD" The Robert Nagel Jones Charitable Projects Award is given to encourage the support of all charities (including but not limited to BACCHUS of' the U.S. Inc.) through chapter fundraising events and charitable service activities (not all charitable events involve fundraising). Each chapter must submit the enclosed application in order to be considered for the Jones award. All chapters that apply and qualify will receive award certificates. In addition, there wil be one award winner and three runners-up. Criteria for the award includes the number of members (and percent of membership who participate in the project(s), the number of hours spent on the project(s), the originality of the project(s), the degree of organization required for the project(s) the Success of the project(s) and the extent of the service provided. Participation by a chapter in a charitable project which is organized by another group may qualify for a certificate but not a winning place. Chapters that have conducted or participated in more than one charitable project may submit multiple applications to cover each project. Ronald W. Roskens "SCHOLASTIC ACIEVE MENT" Fraternity members who attain a semester grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the Roskens award. Recipients receive an attractive T-shirt and a certificate suitable for framing. A letter of congratulations is sent to the parent(s) or guardian of the award recipient. Members may qualify for the award more than once, but are only eligible for T-shirts once annually. This award is presented at a chapter meeting by a faculty advisor. Only faculty advisors may summit applications for this award. ~Individual Awards~
Ellsworth C. Dent "MAN OF YEAR AWARD" This award recognizes the top graduating seniors of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. All seniors who will graduate by December 31 of the year in which the award is presented are eligible to apply. Chapters should not limit nominations to the individuals who are recognized with chapter-level "man of the year" awards, because the criteria for the Dent award is often different from those set at the chapter level. Follow the direction on the application. Additional forms are available from the Headquarters office if necessary. No documentation beyond that specifically requested on the form will be retained or presented to the awards committee. The application becomes the permanent property of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. Finalists are expected to be present at the Annual Awards Banquet to be eligible for the award. The five finalists will be interviewed during the national meeting by the members of The Society of the Seventeen. Traditionally, the recipient has received a $ 1,000 cash award from Mrs. Ellsworth C. Dent. Runners-up have received $500 cash awards. Applicants are judged on the following criteria: academic achievement, chapter leadership, campus leadership, service to campus, and Community, honors and citations, scholarships, personal character and a 200-word essay describing the applicant's career objectives. Prof. Grubbs "DISTINGUISHED ADVISOR AWARD" Each chapter may submit one (1) nomination for this award, which honors individuals who have displayed long-standing and effective service as chapter advisor. A type-written application form, together with a glossy photograph and no more than two letters of recommendation as documentation are required. There will be no more than one recipient per year. "WHITE ROSE SWEETHEART" Each chapter is allowed to nominate one (1) candidate for this recognition. The nomination must include three (3) photographs (one portrait and two candid). Finalists, who are selected by the awards committee, are expected to be present at the national meeting to be eligible for the award. The winner will be selected by associate and initiated members of the Fraternity who attend the national meeting. The White Rose Sweetheart recognition is not intended to recognize members of chapter auxiliary (i.e. little sister) groups. Such groups are prohibited by Fraternity policy. Rather, the award is intended to recognize a young woman who has been a special friend to Sigma Tau Gamma Criteria for the award include campus participation and leadership (particularly sorority membership and leadership), scholastic achievement and chapter involvement.
