A Statement On Hazing

Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity believes that the practice of hazing as defined in our Code of Conduct is inconsistent with the Principles of Sigma Tau Gamma and as such cannot and will not be condoned.

Beta Kappa Chapter has adopted the following outlining it's philosophy regarding Associate Membership:

An Associate joins a fraternity to make friends, not to be humiliated. A member's love for his fraternity should based upon his friendships within the fraternity, not because he was hazed.

An Associate is not a slave, so he should not be treated like one. He is there to learn how to make a positive contribution to his fraternity, not to do the dirty work for members. Don't ask him to do something you would not do the act yourself.

An Associate should show respect to members, and members should respect the Associate as a future brother.

An Associate should not be threatened with blackball because he refuses to be hazed.

An Associate Member program is not a test to see how much an Associate will take before he quits. It is a time to learn about the fraternity and its members. The requirements should be spelled out in detail and should be fully understood by both the Associates and the members. The punishment for not fulfilling the requirements for Associate Membership should not be hazing, but should be a dismissal of the Associate from the membership process.

"Hazing is defined as any action taken intentionally by a chapter or its members to harass other members or associates. Examples of such activities are paddling, creation of excessive fatigue, public embarrassment or ridicule, and activities that interfere with scholastic achievement, and any other activities of this type that are not consistent with the Laws of the Fraternity, Ritual, policy, or the regulations and policies of the educational institution."
