Free Technology Training

Information Technology Services offers free training for registered UW-La Crosse students. Classes cover computer training on popular software. No registration is required, but seating is limited. Students are admitted first-come, first-served basis.

Electronic Portfolio and Web Page Q & A / Help Sessions

Stop in throughout the semester with any questions regarding your electronic portfolio or web page. Stop with one question or stay and work the entire time. TLC staff will be providing assistance in room 130 Wing during the following times. Remember content questions are answered by your faculty or course instructor. (We also offer workshops during this time or you can schedule other times during the week, email tlc@uwlax.edu to schedule. Also there are workshop times offered on p. 6 for web pages and electronic portfolios.)

*Web Page Help Sessions

If you are creating a web page for a class assignment, for example BIO 203, you can stop at any of the sessions listed for help using SharePoint Designer. If you are using another web authoring program and require help publishing, contact Saundra Solum, solum.saun@uwlax.edu 608.785.8799.

*Artifacts and Electronic Portfolios-PDFs

Learn how to put your artifacts into your e-portfolio by using Adobe Acrobat to create PDF files or using Word viewer or by creating web pages. Also learn how to place these PDF files and other artifacts (PowerPoint) into your e-portfolio.

*Scanning, Images, & Web Buttons

Learn how to scan pictures or documents and then improve these scanned images by using Microsoft Picture Manager. Microsoft Picture Manager gives you the possibilities to alter your images in many ways, including adjusting sizes. Also learn how to create your own web buttons and banners.

*Finishing Touches to your Electronic Portfolio

Now that you have completed your e-portfolio, where do you go next? It is important to make your e-portfolio accessible to advisors and future employers. You will learn how to do this in two different ways: creating CD’s to hand out or publishing your e-portfolio.  

Reading Campus Email with OWA

Come and find out how easy it is to correspond with your instructors and friends (or anyone with an email address).  You will learn how to send, receive, reply, delete, attach files and locate email addresses.  Contact Saundra Solum in the ITS Support Center, 103 Wing, 608.785.8799, or solum.saun@uwlax.edu to schedule a small group or individual training.

Internet 101 and Searching the Web

This informational session does not include hands-on, but a presentation/demonstration. You will see how easy it is to find information using Internet Explorer and several search engines. Find out how to search for information and how to set up favorites for future reference!  Call  785.8799 or solum.saun@uwlax.edu to schedule this class.

Creating a Web Page with SharePoint Designer.

Are you interested in designing a Web page?  We will take a look at some sample pages and begin your understanding of a Web page using Microsoft SharePoint Designer.

If you are a new student webmaster for a campus group, please schedule an individual session. Call 608.785.8799 to set up an individual or small group session.

Do you  need web space for publishing a portfolio or for a class assignment? Space is provided for all students on the Student Academic Web Sever (SAWS) for academic assignments and electronic portfolios. Go to http://acadweb.uwlax.edu for further details.

Scanning and Microsoft Picture Manager

Do you want to add a picture to your web page or send someone a recent picture using email? Come and find out how to use the scanners available for student use on campus. There is at least one scanner in every GCA lab.

Photo Story 3

Learn how to use this free program from Microsoft that allows you to create slideshows using digital photos, adding special effect, soundtracks, and even your own voice narration. It uses small file size so works well in your portfolio. Bring along your digital photos.

Using Word to Write a Paper

This hands-on MS Word training covers opening files, creating new files, formatting text, inserting footnotes and page numbers, grammar checking, saving and printing a document, format painter, tabs, replacing text and so on.

Special Pricing on Microsoft® Office - SharePoint Designer Free Download

All UW-L students have the option of purchasing Microsoft® Office 2007 Enterprise, which includes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, OneNote and Outlook. The cost is $72. Check out the WISC website, http://wiscsoftware.wisc.edu/ for more information, additional products and current pricing.  

Microsoft® released SharePoint Designer as a free download and is available only for PCs (not Apple). Go to http://microsoft.com and search for SharePoint Designer download to locate the software.  

Guest Instructor

Invite an ITS lecturer into your class to provide technology training for your students. The technology workshop is usually presented in a computer classroom to offer hands on learning for the students. Training/workshops can be customized to fit your students’ needs. Some examples include APA styles and Word, Creating Web Pages, Starting an Electronic Portfolio, and Using Excel to Create Budgets.

Are you an advisor for a student organization? Training can also be provided to student groups on campus.
