Ortho Evra

The Birth Control Patch

What is it? Ortho Evra is a highly effective, weekly hormonal birth control patch that is worn on the skin to prevent pregnancy.  The patch is worn for 1 week at a time and is replaced on the same day of the week for 3 consecutive weeks.  The fourth week is patch-free.  It is a reversible form of contraception that does not affect future fertility.

How does it work? The patch delivers continuous levels of 2 hormones, estrogen and progesterone, through the skin and into the blood stream.  It is 99% effective when used correctly.  It may be slightly less effective in women with body weight > 198 pounds.

What are the side effects?

Minor

Some of the most common side effects include breast tenderness, headache, nausea, skin irritation at the application site, breakthrough bleeding, and menstrual cramps.

Major

Serious side effects include blood clots, stroke or heart attack, and are increased if you smoke cigarettes.  Some women should not use the patch, including individuals with a history of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, or certain cancers.

How do I find out more information? If you would like more information you may contact the Student Health Center.  If you are interested in starting this method or switching to the patch please make an appointment with a health center provider or your personal medical practitioner.
