Scheduled Appointments vs. Urgent Care Visits

Scheduled Appointments

Advantages:

  • Students can schedule appointments around their busy schedules.
  • Scheduled appointments tend to run on time, resulting in less waiting in the reception area.
  • For ongoing or complex medical problems, scheduled appointments allow students to receive the comprehensive care they deserve.
  • Students have more flexibility in choosing the provider they will see.
  • Appointments help students establish a relationship with their preferred provider. It is in your best interest to have one provider who knows you and your health care needs well and can work with you to maintain your good health throughout your college career.

Disadvantages:

  • Some services, such as PAP smears, are only available by scheduled appointment.
  • Students may have to wait a day or more for their appointment.

Scheduled Same-Day Appointments

Advantages:

  • Students can be seen on the same day they schedule the appointment.
  • Scheduled appointments tend to run on time, resulting in less waiting in the reception area.

Disadvantages:

  • Students may have fewer options for appointment times as same-day appointments tend to fill-up fast.
  • Students may not be able to see their preferred or primary provider.
  • Some services, such as PAP smears, are not offered on a same-day basis.
  • Complex or chronic problems usually cannot be adequately evaluated or remedied during a same-day appointment.

Urgent Care Visits

Advantages:

  • Allow students with acute injuries and illnesses to receive more immediate attention.

Disadvantages:

  • Waiting times for Urgent care visits are unpredictable and may be long if Urgent care is busy.
  • Urgent care clients are seen by the provider assigned to Urgent Care that day; this may or may not be the student’s preferred or primary provider.
  • Complex or chronic problems (e.g. chronic headaches) often require a follow-up scheduled appointment for comprehensive evaluation, resulting in two visits instead of one.
  • Many complex conditions or those that have been present for weeks or months are not likely to be fully remedied during an Urgent care visit.
