Read President Bush’s address to the nation and consider our
discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of imperialism to the United
States and: China,
Hawaii, Panama,
Puerto Rico, Cuba,
and the Philippines. Then, answer the following questions:
|
|

- What
advantages of imperialism to the United
States did Bush mention in his
speech? Are there additional
advantages not mentioned? Which
ones? Explain.
- What
disadvantages of imperialism to the United
States does Bush refer to in this
speech? Are there others that he
didn’t mention? Which ones? Explain.
- What
advantages of imperialism to Iraq
and Afghanistan
did Bush mention in his speech? Are there others that he did not
mention? Which ones? Explain.
- Does
President Bush discuss any disadvantages of imperialism to Iraq
and Afghanistan
in his speech? If so, which
disadvantages does he discuss? If
not, what disadvantages do you think exist?

After the speech, President Bush comes up to you and says
he’s not sure about whether or not we should continue our heavy involvement in Iraq
and Afghanistan
or significantly reduce our role there.
As his top advisor and someone who has now studied situations involving U.S.
imperialism during the late 1800s and early 1900s, you must give him
advice. Pick a stance and write an essay
advising the President on what to do. In
your first paragraph provide three main arguments with a clear explanation of
your rationale. In your second paragraph
pick three of the situations we have studied (China,
Hawaii, Panama,
Puerto Rico, Cuba,
and the Philippines)
and discuss the outcomes of three of these situation
to support your main argument.
Your paper should be typed, and should cite evidence from
three of the six areas we have studied in our unit on Imperialism. In addition, you should cite at least two
current sources in your discussion and advice on our involvement in Iraq.
