Where are These Related Services Received?
(by Bullock, C. C., Therapeutic Recreation in Special Education. The Parent Training Guide to Recreation. Chapel Hill, North Carolina: University of North Carolina, Center for Recreation and Disabilities Studies.)
Depending on the services prescribed in the IEP, recreation services for students with disabilities are delivered in a variety of settings. These environments include self-contained developmental or remedial education classes, inclusive classes, resource programs, and other places such as institutions and treatment facilities. IEP prescribed services need not be restricted to school hours.
The therapeutic recreation specialist could work within a single
educational setting (for example, regular school); itinerant service to
more than one school, resource room, special school, or center; in a shared
service arrangement; or outside the traditional instructional setting.
With the present emphasis in secondary education on transition from school
to work and community living, therapeutic recreation specialists may begin
to work closely with vocational education, vocational rehabilitation, and
community service agencies in order to enhance the student's education
and, consequently, potential for successful transition.
