Who May Receive "Recreation as a Related Service?"
(Bullock, C. C., Therapeutic Recreation in Special Education. The Parent Training Guide to Recreation. Chapel Hill, North Carolina: University of North Carolina, Center for Recreation and Disabilities Studies.)
All children with disabling conditions as defined by federal mandate
may receive recreation services. However, only those students whose IEP's
include recreation as a related service receive assessment and subsequent
remediation. Students are referred for recreation services by regular or
special education teachers, child study teams, or other related services
personnel. The students referred are ones who need a comprehensive recreation
and leisure assessment or have been identified by other assessment procedures
as needing recreation services to assist in the completion of regular education
goals or IEP objectives. Whatever the reason, any student with a handicapping
condition who is referred for recreation services will receive recreation
services as appropriate to extend and enhance the student's education in
the least restrictive environment.
