Faculty/staff: Remember to include disability syllabus and access statements in syllabus
Disability and access statement“Any student with a documented disability (e.g., physical, learning, psychiatric, vision or hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the instructor and the Disability Resource Services Office (165 Murphy Library) at the beginning of the semester.” Note: Students who are currently using Disability Resource Services will have a copy of a contract that verifies they are qualified students with disabilities who have documentation on file in the Disability Resource Services Office. |
The Office of Affirmative Action and the Office of Disability Resource Services would like to remind, and strongly encourage, all faculty and instructional academic staff to place the statement at right in syllabi at the beginning of each semester; place it on the blackboard/bulletin board in the classrooms where you teach; and add it to any e-mails/Web-based course materials you use. The method(s) used should be based on the ability to provide this statement to all students in your classes.
By providing this statement, UW-L faculty and instructional academic staff will ensure disability disclosure and inform students of UW-L's desire to provide reasonable accommodations for students with a disability.
It is also important for all faculty and academic and classified staff to be aware of the following disability access information:
- When planning conferences, events and activities, have someone in your office or department be responsible for handling requests for accommodations. Call Disability Resource Services at 785.6900 for assistance with arranging and implementing accommodations.
- In registration brochures, invitations or fliers, use the following access statement: “To request disability accommodations, contact (name, department, address and phone number).”
- Publications such as college bulletins, program brochures, class schedules, newsletters and instructional publications must be provided in alternative formats (Braille, large print, tape, electronic) upon request. In these publications use the following statement: “This publication/material is available in alternative formats upon request. Contact (name, department, address, and phone number).”
For more information, contact Carmen Wilson, special assistant to the Chancellor and Affirmative Action officer, at wilson.carm@uwlax.edu or 785.8043; or June Reinert, Disability Resource Services director, at reinert.june@uwlax.edu or 785.6900.
