October is Disability Awareness Month
October is Disability Awareness Month. The highlighted event this year is the Disability History Exhibit which traces 3,000 years of seldom-told history. From antiquity to the present, the exhibit brings viewers through an illustrated timeline that shows society’s attitudes and how they affect the lives of people with disabilities.
This exhibition is on loan from the Advocating Change Together Organization in Minneapolis and will be on display from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, and from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. A reception is set for 4:30 p.m. Monday. The exhibit will be displayed at Murphy Library Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 14 and 15. Find out more about the exhibit at www.selfadvocacy.org/toolsforchange/history.htm.

Multicultural Faculty and Staff Organization to meet Oct. 5
The Multicultural Faculty and Staff Organization (MUFASO) will hold its first meeting of the year from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in 263 Cartwright Center. MUFASO is open to anyone interested in discussing issues and concerns pertinent to the recruitment and retention of multicultural faculty, staff and students. Bring a lunch if you like.
'Return to Hansala' is Oct. 6 Hispanic Heritage Month film
The Spanish drama "Return to Hansala" (Retorno a Hansala) will be show from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in 141 Wimberly Hall as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. After meeting the sister of a dead man who risked his life to travel from Morocco to Spain on a rubber raft, a Spanish mortuary owner is forced to reassess the nature of his work. While it's undeniably lucrative to help the Spanish government clean up the endless stream of corpses washing ashore, it proves morally problematic once he sees where the bodies are coming from in this moving drama. Spanish and Arabic with English subtitles. Vicente C. Guillot, an associate professor of World Languages from Viterbo University, will lead a discussion following the film.

UW-L volleyball team hosts 'Dig for the Cure'
UW-L's volleyball team will join other Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's volleyball teams to support Breast Cancer Awareness. UW-L challenges UW-Oshkosh at the “Dig for the Cure” event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Mitchell Hall.
"This promotion is another example of the emphasis that the WIAC and its member institutions place on the involvement of student-athletes in activities that benefit worthwhile causes," says UW-L Women's Volleyball Coach Sheila Perkins. "The UW-L volleyball team is very excited to have the opportunity to partner with the Komen Foundation to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise funds that we hope will lead to a cure of this disease."
Wear pink and make a contribution at the door through a direct donation or by purchasing a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes. Prizes include volleyballs and sweatshirts donated by UW-L Volleyball Camps. A traditional post-match serving contest will give all fans a chance to win a pink "Dig for the Cure" T-shirt.
All cancer survivors will be admitted free of charge and will be honored during the match. Fans may also choose to honor loved ones touched by cancer on the "Awareness Wall." The “Dig for the Cure” promotion during the 2009 season is in cooperation with the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
If you are unable to attend and would like to donate to the cause, contact Sheila Perkins at perkins.shei@uwlax.edu.

UW-L Theatre opens season with twisted comedy
If you go— |
George F. Walker’s wicked comedy “Escape from Happiness” will open the 2009-10 University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Department of Theatre Arts performance season. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16-17 and Oct. 22-24, and 2 o’clock matinees Sundays Oct. 18 and 25. Performances are in Toland Theatre in the Center for the Art, 16th and Vine streets.
A provocative examination of the traditional role of family, “Escape from Happiness” chronicles the antics of the Dawsons — Nora, Gail, Elizabeth and Mary-Ann — as they struggle with family dynamics and the reappearance of their semi-catatonic father, Tom. Tight-knit, yet blunt to a fault, the Dawsons are an eccentric, in-your-face bunch, that consistently push the envelope when it comes to “family values.” With the urban world closing in around them, the Dawsons are forced to pit violence against love in a high-stakes gamble at happiness.
Part of a dynamic trilogy of plays by Walker, the production is a guilty pleasure sure with lots of laughter. Mature audiences only are recommended.
Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in the Theatre Box Office, first floor of the Center for the Arts. Tickets are $4 for UW-L students; $10 for other students and senior citizens; and $12 for others. For reservations, call the box office at 785.8522. Box office hours are 1-4:30 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and one hour before show time.

HUB Spokes
UW-L is now a member of the Upper Midwest Higher Education Consortium (UM HERC). UM HERC is a consortium of institutions of higher education in the upper Midwest. The UM HERC mission is: “through the sharing of information and resources, [to] support its member institutions in attracting outstanding and diverse faculty, administrators, and staff.”
Several regional HERC affiliates exist throughout the nation (for example, New England and Greater Chicago). The Upper Midwest HERC consists of institutions in Minnesota, eastern North Dakota, western Wisconsin and northeastern Iowa. HERC acts as clearinghouse, of sorts, by posting all jobs from institutions within the regional affiliate. HERC advertises in places such as the Chronicle of Higher Education, Diverse Issues, Hispanic Outlook and more. HERC representatives also attend regional conferences to promote the service. HERC also allows for dual career searches for partners and spouses. In addition to providing one-stop shopping for faculty and staff positions in the upper Midwest, HERC also acts as a gateway to some of the largest non-academic employers in the upper Midwest. The Web site offers individuals and families a number of regional and relocation resources.
To learn more about UM HERC, visit http://www.uppermidwestherc.org/home/index.cfm?site_id=4166.
On another note, HUB Spokes is now one month old. You have heard from me (Carmen Wilson, Affirmative Action), Campus Climate & Diversity, Disability Resource Services, and Human Resources, in that order. We will continue to rotate the column among our four areas. Why wasn't the Screaming Eagles Marching Band in the Campus Child Center Oktoberfest Parade?Tammy Fisher explains why the marching band was unable to performThere have been many inquiries regarding the absence of the Screaming Eagles Marching Band from the Campus Child Center Oktoberfest Parade this past week. Though we informed the Child Care Center, it is apparent other individuals were caught by surprise. Please understand that though it was our desire to be there, class conflicts at UW-L’s heaviest class time, 11 a.m., prevented us from putting a group together that would have been representative of the band. Additionally, demands on students for academic excellence and class attendance make it difficult for students to be excused from classes by professors. In the end, we simply did not have enough of the melody instruments and percussion to lead the sound and the songs! We assure everyone that this was not an easy decision to make. — Former Director of the Screaming Eagles Marching Band Tammy Fisher Editor's note: Andrew Tucker, Music, is the new director of the Screaming Eagles Marching Band. You can reach Tucker at 785.6725 or tucker.andr@uwlax.edu. |

For students
By Charlene Holler, Academic Specialist, Counseling and Testing Center
Hand in hand with planning your time is knowing what you have to accomplish each day. This planning comes in the form of “to do” lists, written down or mentally noted. Each day you should note what MUST be done that day, how long you think that task will take you, and when you are going to fit it in. You should also have a list of school-related tasks that you could work on if you have time. When you have an hour between classes, 30 minutes before you are meeting a friend for lunch, or 10 minutes waiting for an appointment, find something on your list to tackle. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish in these short time segments and how satisfying it is to cross things off your lists.
There are many good reasons for a time schedule including ...
- It will get you started studying;
- It will remind you not to avoid subjects you do not like;
- It will promote regular cumulative reviews in your classes;
- It will help you focus on the hardest material right before an exam;
- It will help you plan for long-range assignments; and
- It will help reduce the stress of the semester that comes when you are behind.
