UW-L centennial celebration begins with Chancellor's address, Centennial Hall groundbreaking
![]() |
| Faculty Emeritus Kip Zirkel got a bird's eye view of UW-L's All-University Address Sept. 3. "Attached is photo of what appears to be your speech to the faculty in the stadium," says Zirkel in an e-mail to Chancellor Joe Gow. "I was flying over on the way back to the airport after a morning of aerial photography and shot this pic of you holding forth! Sorry if I created too much noise." |
'F' words present challenge, opportunity
Chancellor Joe Gow shared a list of “f” words in his annual University Address Sept. 2. Gow referred to three “f” challenges: furloughs, flu and finances. He also outlined three positive “f’s”: facilities, faculty (and staff), and the future. Gow said two additional “f’s” will help the university prevail — faith in the university’s new mission statement and friends. “Let’s be good colleagues and good friends and let’s celebrate the 100th birthday of this fine old university and go into the new year energized to do great things,” he concluded.
Centennial Hall: 'Heart of the campus and the academic enterprise'
The official groundbreaking ceremony for Centennial Hall was held Sept. 2 following Chancellor Gow’s annual University Address. “This [Centennial Hall] will be the heart of the campus and the academic enterprise,” predicted Gow at the ceremony. “This building will be used by every UW-L student for a very long time.” Gow said the building will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certified, making it the first LEED building on a four-year UW campus. He says only $700,000 of private money needs to be raised for the $44 million project expected to be completed in mid-2011.

UW-L to dedicate stadium Sept. 12
After years of planning and a successful capital campaign, the $16.6 million UW-La Crosse Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex has become a reality. Area residents are welcome to join in the dedication of the impressive facility.
The celebration gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in the Stadium Parking lot. The historic event, open to the public, will honor veterans and recognize donors and volunteers who helped make the project possible.
The Traveling Tomb of the Unknown Solider, a replica of the memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, will be displayed in the parking lot throughout the day.
Following the dedication, the UW-L football team takes on Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) in the team’s home opener at 1 p.m. UW-L leads the all-time series 2-1 after Azusa Pacific recorded a 13-10 victory in 2008 at a game played in Winona. For each of the last 25 years the Department of Modern Languages has sponsored five international students to work in the department as native-speaker language assistants. On Aug. 28 and 29, the department hosted approximately a dozen past interns, as well as this year’s new arrivals to celebrate this 25th anniversary. The event included an excursion on the La Crosse Queen, tours of the campus and a cook out at the home of Barbara Rusterholz's, Modern Languages.
Many Amity Scholars have remained in the U.S. to finish their graduate education. At least two currently serve as chairs of departments of modern languages at American universities. Most have returned to their home countries where many teach in a variety of educational settings.
The Amity Scholars Program has provided an enrichment opportunity for the Department of Modern Languages, students in the programs of this department, the university and the greater La Crosse community, says UW-L Faculty Emeritus John Magerus, former dean of the College of Liberal Studies.
Five Amity Scholars are at UW-L for the 2009-10 academic year representing Colombia, France, Germany and Spain. Welcome or welcome back.
My name is Charlene Holler and my title is Academic Specialist. You may be thinking, “Couldn’t almost everyone here at UW-L call themselves an ‘academic specialist’?" The distinction I make is that I do not specialize in any one academic discipline, but in the area of learning theory and study skills. In very precise language, if you do not feel you are getting the best results from your study time, I can help. Each week I will provide a study suggestion in this newsletter. Because of the limited space my suggestion may seem simplistic, and you may want more specifics.
If you have questions or want a more personal discussion about your study techniques, stop by the Counseling and Testing Center, 170 Morris Hall, call 785.8073, or e-mail me at holler.char@uwlax.edu. I will be calling my weekly newsletter suggestion “Take Note.” I hope you find some of the strategies helpful. I welcome your feedback and would be happy to meet with you.
