Group with print of IwoJimaFlag and checks
Members of the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary presented Acting President of the UW-L Foundation Al Trapp with two checks and a print on Feb. 16 in support of the Veterans Hall of Honor. Veterans' support of Veterans Hall of Honor includes Iwo Jima print

On Feb. 16, members of the VFW, Thomas Rooney Post 1530, Veterans of Foreign Wars, La Crosse — representing about 1,000 members — presented Acting President of the UW-L Foundation Al Trapp with a $700 check in support of the Veterans Hall of Honor. The Ladies Auxiliary presented Trapp with a $300 check in its support. Kenneth Espenses donated a print to be displayed in the hall.

The limited edition print of U.S. Marines raising the U.S. flag in the Feb. 23, 1945, battle for Iwo Jima depicts the first flag raising, which occurred shortly after U.S. Marines gained the top of Mt. Suribachi. Pictures and photos of a second flag raising are better known. The original flag was deemed too small to be easily seen from the base of the mountain, so a second, larger flag was raised. Espenses was in the first platoon to summit the mountain. He may be the only survivor.

The Hall of Honor will be housed in UW-L's Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex and will serve as a gathering place and meeting room and as a place to honor, recognize and thank U.S. veterans.

To find out more about the Veterans Hall of Honor and how to make a donation to it, contact Veterans Hall of Honor Coordinator Pat Stephens at 785.8153 or stephens.patr@uwlax.edu.

Teatime/Soapbox discussion features first American woman to earn a doctorate in math

Learn more about the first American woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics at the Teatime/Soapbox discussion at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in 432 Wimberly Hall. Sue Kelly will present "She Opened Doors," a discussion on Winifred Edgerton Merrill.

Merrill was born in Ripon in 1862. Her family moved to the east coast where she was first educated by private tutors and later attended and graduated from Wellesley College. After graduating from Wellesley, Merrill was permitted to take mathematics and astronomy courses at Columbia College, an all-male school at the time. She graduated from Columbia in 1886, becoming the first female graduate of Columbia College and the first American woman to receive a doctoral degree in mathematics.

Merrill gained her education when colleges open to women were first emerging in this country. After graduating, she worked to expand opportunities for women. The talk presents events and accomplishments in her life in the context of women’s history of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The discussion is sponsored by the mathematics and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality departments.

Peoplesoft Campus Solutions update

The project team is celebrating two successful go-lives. PeopleSoft Campus Solutions for Financial Aid went “live” Feb. 16. Applications for financial aid for the summer and fall 2009 sessions are now being loaded into Campus Solutions. All new and continuing students will be granted their financial aid awards during the month of March in the new system. Business Services went “live” Feb. 17 with e-Payments and CashNet. New graduate and transfer students are the first to be able to pay on-line by ACH or credit card in the new system.

The next PeopleSoft Modules to be implemented will be Student Records and Student Financials, which is scheduled in March 2009.

Here are a few additional highlights from the Project Team:

  • The Student Senate had an opportunity to view the new WINGS Student Center (replaces TALON) and is excited about the new Web-based, user-friendly, modern look to self-service.
  • Millions of student and staff records have been converted from the legacy system to PeopleSoft Campus Solutions; most of this work is accomplished on weekends to avoid disruptions to the campus business activities.
  • A searchable class schedule (time table) for summer 2009 course offerings will soon be available.
  • Training plans are being developed for the campus later this spring. A just-in-time training model is being used; come to training, go back to your office and start working in PeopleSoft.
  • The new WINGS Faculty Center will make its debut sometime in late March/early April. Training will be provided.
  • There will be a transition period this spring as the campus moves to PeopleSoft; some activities for the spring 2009 semester will need to be completed in the legacy system (for example, entering grades for the spring semester) while activities starting with summer 2009 will be completed in Campus Solutions (for example, class enrollments for the summer).

These are just a few highlights of some of the things coming up in the near future. The SIS Project Team appreciates your patience as it continues working on the implementation of PeopleSoft Campus Solutions. The timeline for this implementation is an aggressive one and everyone is working very hard to make it successful for the campus. Refer any questions regarding the project to Debbie Veglahn, project manager, at 785.8635. For more information on the PeopleSoft Student Information System implementation project, go to www.uwlax.edu/peoplesoft.
