Jessie Hermes and Danielle Balistrieri in front of posters

Students present research at 3rd annual research poster session Aug. 6

Twenty-nine students presented research at the 3rd annual College of Science and Health research poster session Aug. 6. Three of the students and their presentations include:

  • UW-L senior Jessie Hermes, left in photo above, a biology major from Green Bay, presented "Is Simulated Climate Change Driving Microevolution in a Northern California Meadow?" Northern California is predicted to have increased rainfall due to impending climate change. Her poster demonstrates the research she did on how adding water via sprinklers to a plot of northern California grassland might influence species change over time. Hermes has a minor in chemistry.

  • Danielle Balistrieri, right in photo above, is working on an Early Adolescence — Adolescence Licensure in education, and has broad field science and biology majors. The UW-L senior from West Allis will graduate in December. She presented "Connecting Scientific Research and the Classroom." She worked with Meredith Thomsen, and Tim Gerber, both biology, to create a lesson plan connected to her research experiences that will expose students to how science is conducted outside the classroom.

  • UW-L sophomore Yer Lor, below, photo center, of La Crosse is majoring in cellular and molecular biology. Her poster, "Morphology and DNA Phylogeny in the Land Snail Family Polygyridea," illustrates research she and colleagues performed using DNA sequencing to help determine if current relationships and species identification within this family of approximately 400 species of land snails is accurate or needs to be reconsidered.

Associate Professor Emeritus Paul Keaton’s lessons true beyond classroom

Associate Professor Emeritus Paul Keaton died at age 66 in his home July 31. His funeral services are set for 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Bethany Evangelical Free Church in La Crosse. Burial will be in Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call from noon to services Aug. 13 at the church. A complete obituary will be provided by Dickinson Family Funeral Home.

Campus Connection Editor Sue Lee interviewed and photographed Associate Professor Emeritus Paul Keaton July 20 and 21 on his May 24 retirement for this article to be printed in an upcoming College of Business Administration "Building Bridges" magazine. Keaton died July 31.

An avalanche of technological changes occurred since 1978 when Associate Professor Emeritus Paul Keaton started teaching management classes at UW-L. Despite those changes, learning, growing and giving back were themes that remained constants in what Keaton taught.

Paul Keaton
Associate Professor Emeritus Paul Keaton taught management courses in Wimberly Hall since 1978. He retired from UW-L May 24. He died at age 66 in his home July 31.

And in how he lived.

After retiring from UW-L May 24, Keaton planned to get in touch with and help young entrepreneurs by volunteering his time and expertise as a business counselor to SCORE Counselors to America's Small Business. The nonprofit association is dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and to the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide.

But working with SCORE after he retired didn’t happen. Keaton died at age 66 in his home July 31.

When asked in a July 20 interview what he’d like his students to take away from the experience of having him as a professor, he said, “Ask good questions and think. There are always different sides — at least two — to every issue.”

The impact of technological advances is no exception, he said. “Technology has changed how we teach and learn. With today’s technology everything is happening in real time. Information is being spread to more people at lightening speed. It’s harder to protect secrets and to control information. Rumors spread faster and to more people.”

Technology has increased the need for people to act even more responsibly, Keaton warned. People need to ask if information is accurate, to consider what information they’re disseminating. “Ideas have origins and they have consequences,” he noted.

Technological advances have also made it possible for businesses to grow and prosper internationally. He told students to anticipate working on an international level. He advised students to learn another language to be more valuable in today’s business world. It’s also important to be aware of cultural differences to avoid making faux paus, he said.

Although by the time a textbook is written it’s already lost its currency, he said, the ability to trust those you’re working with remains.

“People are always the key in management,” Keaton said. “A manager can’t afford to live and work in isolation. Understand your employees. Talk to them. The worst case scenario as a manager is to have your employees be suspicious of what you’re really after. Trust is key.”

Keaton told students to draw from college.

“Your greatest acquisition at UW-L was learning how to learn and think,” he said. “Now it's your turn to give back to the world from your store of learning!”

Funds needed to continue baseball, tennis for 2009-10 school year

Eighty-five donors have given to baseball and 32 have donated to tennis. Nonetheless, while both programs have made solid progress toward their fundraising goals for the coming year, they have yet to reach the minimum amounts needed to continue the programs in 2009-10. Specifically, as of Aug. 5 baseball needs to raise another $7,258 and tennis $3,060. Although additional monies may have been pledged, funds need to be in hand by the beginning of the new academic year in order for the university to enter into contracts with the coaches for the coming season.

To make a gift contact Pat Stephens, L Club/UW-L Foundation, at 785.8153 or stephens.patr@uwlax.edu.
