UW-L: No. 3 in the Midwest
University remains the state’s top-ranked master’s-level institution
UW-L is once again the state’s top ranked public — and private — university in the master’s category annual ranking by U.S.News and World Report.
UW-L ranked No. 3 in the Midwest among public universities that offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the magazine’s “2010 America’s Best Colleges.” Among all public and private institutions, UW-L tied with St. Catherine University of Minnesota for the No. 17 ranking.
Last year, UW-L was tied for No. 2 with the University of Northern Iowa. In the 2010 listing, Truman State University is No. 1 among publics, while Northern Iowa retained the No. 2 spot.
UW-L has appeared prominently on the U.S.News list for more than a decade — and among the top three Midwest institutions since 2002.
“While numerical rankings alone can’t tell a college or university’s entire story, U.S. News is reminding us that UW-La Crosse is very good at providing a high-quality education,” says UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow. “I’m sure those who founded our university 100 years ago would be pleasantly surprised to see that we're realizing their original vision in ways that exceed even their most optimistic expectations.”
Among other UW four-year campuses UW-Eau Claire ranked No. 6 (29th overall) and UW-Stevens Point was No. 14 (54th overall). UW-Madison is ranked No. 39 in the national universities category.
The U.S.News rankings system relies on quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, as well as a nonpartisan view of what matters in education. Complete listings are available at www.usnews.com./

UW-L class to help artists market their work
Area artists can discover ways to market their artwork. UW-L's Continuing Education will offer “Marketing Basics for Artists,” a non-credit program, from 5:45-8:45 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 16 and 23, in Morris Hall.
“Marketing Basics for Artists” is a six-hour program designed to assist artists in marketing their art. The class will include a short review of the basics of starting and running an art business, as well as ways to use creativity to improve a career and living by effectively marketing art. Newly acquired marketing skills will help artists competitively price, present and sell their artwork, choose a target market, analyze the competition and design effective promotional materials, such as business cards, portfolio, artist statement and bio.
The workshop also covers how to promote exhibitions and other events, along with ways to introduce art to the right people: patrons, gallery owners, interior designers, and encourage them to purchase the artwork.
Instructor Martina Skobic holds a master’s degree from UW-L and a Law Degree from the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has more than 20 years of international and domestic legal, business, teaching and consulting experience working with individuals, organizations and groups in diverse settings within private, public and government sectors. Skobic has produced, exhibited and sold art pieces — paintings, drawings, objects and others — for years. She has served in a number of community and art organizations.
Registration is $70. Pre-registration is required; space is limited. To register or for more information, contact Continuing Education at 785.6500 or www.uwlax.edu/conted.
