UW-L's John Ready exhibiting artwork on Milwaukee’s RiverWalk

Visitors to Milwaukee’s RiverWalk are getting a close-up look at large, over-sized decorative jewelry created by UW-L Art Gallery Director John Ready.

Ready, who began his art career as a jeweler but has changed his focus to sculpting, began installing “River Gems” in May for the exhibit that runs through 2010. The works include huge steel rings along the walk, necklaces on bridge houses, earring-like pieces on lights, and brooches on buildings. The pieces will change over time to better integrate them with specific locations along the route.

Ready created the large-sculpted jewels primarily from recycled materials. Among them: bowling balls, aluminum Jell-O molds, cookware, pots, martini shakers, lamp parts, vases, chains and more. He found most of his items for the works from Goodwill and Salvation Army. Ready hopes the pieces will make viewers think about objects they’re planning to toss and how them might re-use them instead of throwing them out.

Ready was intrigued about making art specifically for the city. “I’m motivated by creating sculptural art that works within the context of the city,” he explains. “I’m hoping the pieces become the talk of the town.”

Milwaukee’s RiverWalk is celebrating its 20th year. Ready’s installation is the first public art created for the walk.

La Crosse Area Day: another home run

Joe Crede, Ryan Braun, Casey McGehee and Prince Fielder weren't the only ones hitting home runs on June 25. Thirty-nine buses, including one leaving from UW-L's Cleary Alumni & Friends Center, took nearly 2,000 baseball fans to Milwaukee for La Crosse Area Day at Miller Park. Although a 6 - 4 victory for the Minnesota Twins was disappointing for Brewers fans, overcast skies kept temperatures to a tolerable level. La Crosse area fans enjoyed live music and a tailgate party of brats and hot dogs before the game and air-conditioned buses for the ride home. Find out more about La Crosse Area Day at http://www.holmenwi.com/holmenpr/brewerbustrip.htm. Approximately 150 volunteers, including many UW-L students, employees, alumni and retirees, helped to make Freedom Fest weekend a success. Diana Johnson, English, was one of 53 guardians on the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. She's pictured here with her father, Walter "Walt" Neubauer, at the National World War II Memorial. Other Freedom Fest events were concerts by The Remainders and Lonestar, a Freedom Honor Flight and the 11th Annual Deke Slayton Airfest. The airfest included U.S. military and internationally-known civilian performers with air- and ground-based activities featuring static display aircraft, NASA information and exhibits.

This is the second year that a Freedom Honor Flight left the La Crosse airport taking 100 military veterans to memorials in Washington, D.C., including the National World War II Memorial which opened to the public in April 2004. Senior veterans — World War II survivors — were given top priority for the free trip.

The Freedom Honor Flight organization is organizing another flight for October. The Freedom Honor Flight is part of the Honor Flight Network, a national non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans. Find out more, including how you can help as a donor or volunteer, at www.freedomhonorflight.org/.

In the news

UW-L baseball: "Schwarz maintains cautious optimism," La Crosse Tribune, June 23. The e-mail from Chris Schwarz had better news than Zach Thiel ever could have expected. It had been 10 days since Thiel launched his Web site devoted to keeping the UW-L baseball program alive. By Monday, www.saveuwlbaseball.com had more than 1,000 hits. And Schwarz, UW-L’s coach, let Thiel know $15,000 of the $50,000 it would take to sustain the Eagles for the 2010 season had been raised. "UW staff could be assigned to unions," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, June 25. Thousands of currently unrepresented academic staffers at UW campuses could be assigned into existing unions — rather than having the chance to vote — under a provision included in the state budget, state officials say.
