UW-L Vocal Jazz Ensemble invited to perform at Carnegie Hall

Distinguished Concerts International in New York City has invited UW-L's Vocal Jazz Ensemble to participate in its Vocal Jazz Festival.

The event with Phil Mattson will be held in the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall Sunday, May 22, 2011.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble, conducted by UW-L Music Professor Gary Walth, will appear with a solo set and join other outstanding groups to form the Distinguished Concerts Singers International, a mass jazz choir of distinction. Mattson will be the conductor for the performance, as well as serve as clinician for the residency.

Jonathan Griffith, artistic director and principal conductor for DCINY, says the ensemble was invited because of recommendations and its reputation. “The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Vocal Jazz Ensemble received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers and the exceptional recommendations given by Dr. Walth’s choral colleagues,” explains Griffith. “It is quite an honor just to be invited to perform in Carnegie Hall. These wonderful student musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody and deserving of the community’s recognition and support.”

The singers will spend five days and four nights in New York City to prepare for the concert. The singers will spend approximately 9‐10 hours in rehearsals over the five-day residency. “Not all of the time is spent in rehearsals, since there is so much history and culture to see in New York City,” says Griffith. “However, the performance in Carnegie Hall is the primary purpose for their visit to the city.”

Find out more about choral ensembles and jazz and at UW-L at www.uwlax.edu/music/choral.html and www.uwlax.edu/jazzstudies/index.html.

Three Boll siblings.
From left, Jason, Jake and Janelle Boll.

Three Boll siblings all at UW-L this year

Three Darlington siblings are all on campus this year.

UW-L freshman Jason Boll joined his two siblings this fall at UW-L when he decided to study here. “It was between UW-L and UW-Platteville,” recalls the Darlington native. “Platteville was too close to home.”

Distance from home was one consideration in his older brother’s decision to attend UW-L as well. “At two-and-a-half hours from Darlington, UW-L was perfect,” says Jake, a senior studying education.

In high school, Jake ran at the state track meet at UW-L and was impressed by the beauty and friendliness of campus. And he hasn’t been disappointed, he says. As a residence assistant on campus, Jake’s well known on campus and is on a first-name basis with many, including UW-L’s administrative team.

UW-L’s friendliness was what drew their sister, Janelle, to campus as well. Visiting UW-L was the last campus tour Janelle took in high school. “Everyone was so friendly,” the therapeutic recreation major recalls. “Advisers and faculty have been so easy to talk to. It wasn’t what I expected college to be like.”

Although they didn’t hang out together in high school, the three — who all have busy schedules — hope to get together once a week for a meal while at UW-L.

Hispanic Heritage Month events on campus through Oct. 15

Since 1968, the U.S. has observed National Hispanic Heritage month from Sept. 15 to Oct.15.

UW-L has events planned throughout the month to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. For a complete list of events, visit xxx

Americans of Hispanic heritage interchangeably use Latino, Latina or Hispanic as a generic group designation, in addition to specific national community of origin (such as Mexican-American or Cuban-American). Sept. 15 was the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrated their independence days Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Another date of note is Oct. 12 which is Columbus Day or Día de la Raza (the festival of hybridity or mixed-race heritage).

For more information on Hispanic Heritage Month, visit www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov.

Updates from Information Technology Services

Discover more about UW-L's wireless network policy, get an update on EagleApps, and learn about how you can set yourself up to reset your NetID password should you forget it.

Wireless Network Policy: As the semester begins, ITS often sees personal or non-managed wireless routers and access points added to the network in residence halls and campus buildings. Wireless printers also create interference on the campus wireless network. We want to offer the best wireless coverage and service possible, and these devices interfere with the university devices and cause reduced signal quality and other problems for users. Review our campus wireless network policy at www.uwlax.edu/policies/WirelessNetworkPolicy.html and contact the ITS Support Center at 785.8774 or itssupport@uwlax.edu with questions or for assistance.

Sign up for Password Reset and avoid future problems: It's 10 p.m. and you’ve forgotten your NetID password and can’t login to Desire2Learn? Not if you sign up now for our newest offering - self-service reset password management. Simply put, by answering a few security questions now (when you know your password), you’ll have the ability to go back in the future and reset your own password without assistance from ITS. You’ll also be able to unlock an account that has been locked due to too many password attempts. Enrollment takes only a few minutes. Visit www.uwlax.edu/password to learn more about your UW-L passwords or jump right to https://netidpw.uwlax.edu/ and enroll. If you are using the GCA labs, classrooms or technology podiums, you will be prompted to enroll on your first login. To avoid loss of instruction time, visit the above website to enroll now.  Remember – your NetID password is now DIFFERENT from your EagleApps password even though the user names are the same. Learn more at www.uwlax.edu/password.

EagleApps update:  More than 800 faculty and staff members have begun using EagleApps. To learn more and start your transition, visit www.uwlax.edu/eagleapps/start. Everyone must be using EagleApps by Monday, Nov. 1. If you are using EagleApps and have questions, check out the extensive online help information at www.uwlax.edu/eagleapps, contact the ITS Support Center or contact Faculty and Staff Technology Trainer Jen Snook (snook.jenn@uwlax.edu) for additional training for yourself or your department.

Telephone Services now under ITS:  Helping to align the organization with future needs and comparable organizational structures within the UW-System, Lea Butterfield 785.8002, butterfield.lea@uwlax.edu of Telephone Services has been welcomed into the ITS staff. Butterfield will report to Dave Faulkner as part of the Technical Support Services group. You can reach Butterfield at the same number and e-mail for your telephone needs. Dispatch and switchboard positions will remain under Scott Rhode in University Police.

Questions, concerns, something you’d like to see in the future?  ITS invites you to share your questions, concerns or items you’d like to see in a future edition of the Campus Connection. Contact Janice Ward (ward.jani@uwlax.edu), Interim Chief Information Officer.

Focus on student-funded library resources

Last year, UW-L students worked with the Academic Initiatives Oversight Committee to fund additional library resources, which include additional library hours as well as information research databases.

This week, two of these information databases are highlighted. Both are multidisciplinary and have potential for broad use across many majors for a variety of information needs.

Opposing Viewpoints: According to the publisher Gale, this resource provides contextual information and opinions on hundreds of today's hottest social issues. Drawing on the acclaimed Greenhaven Press series, Opposing Viewpoints features continuously updated viewpoint articles, topic overviews, full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, statistics, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites organized into a user-friendly portal experience.

Reader’s Guide Retrospective: Covering 1890–1982, this resource indexes more than 3 million articles from approximately 375 leading periodicals. It offers full coverage of the original Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature paper volumes, which have been hailed by the American Library Association as one of the “50 Best Reference Sources for the Millennium.” With Murphy Library’s GetTeXt linkages, the full text of many of these articles is often just another click away.

Connect to these and learn about other UW-L student-funded resources at the library home page or go directly to www.uwlax.edu/murphylibrary/events/aioc.html.

For students

By Academic Specialist Charlene Holler, Counseling and Testing Center

Think of a habit you have! Quick ... don’t ponder an answer, but say what first came to mind! I am pretty sure most will have thought of something negative ... biting your nails or twisting your hair.

But I did not ask for a “bad” habit. So, if I must, I will ask you what “good” habits you have. Often this takes more thought and ends with students telling me, “I don’t have any good habits!” But when I ask if you brush your teeth daily, take showers regularly or change your socks often, the same students respond, “Well, of course I do those things, but I do them without even thinking!”

That is precisely my point. Habits are behaviors we do so often they become “second nature” to us. We efficiently do these things as part of our daily or weekly routines. A goal should be to establish efficient patterns of study in your academic life.

Just two good study habits to adopt are:

  1. Finding regular times to study. Look at your schedule and have established times set aside for each subject.
  2. Identifying places where you can study without distractions ... and that will almost certainly not be your residence hall room.

Find a place where you can get much more accomplished in much less time than you could in sight of your bed, TV, stereo, computer and cell phone in your room. I would suggest study lounges, empty classrooms, lounges in Cartwright Center, and the obvious ... Murphy Library.

What unique place have you found on or off campus that helps you focus on your studies?

And I challenge you to be very aware of what times and places lead you to say, “I really felt I got a lot accomplished”!
