UW-L theatre to perform ‘Frozen’
UW-L's Department of Theatre Arts continues its 2009-10 season with the drama “Frozen,” an examination of acceptance and forgiveness after a tragedy. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, Nov. 11-14, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in Frederick Theatre in Morris Hall.
When evidence points to the brutal assault and murder of 10-year-old Rhona, her mother Nancy sinks into a state of frozen shock and despair. When Agnetha, an American scholar, comes to town to work on her thesis, “Serial Killing—A Forgivable Act?”, Nancy begins to confront her grief and the demons that have troubled her. With anger, humanity and compassion, “Frozen” entwines the lives of a murderer, the mother of one of his victims, and his psychologist to explore capacity for forgiveness, remorse and change after an act that would seem to rule them out entirely. The play is a Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award nominee.
Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2. Tickets are $4 for UW-L students; $10 for other students, senior citizens and children; and $12 for others. This is a general seating performance; tickets are required. For reservations call the box office at 785.8522.

Harassment updates
Jean and Morgan, acquaintances, are waiting in the sub sandwich line at Cartwright. They chat a bit, and Jean says, “I really like your outfit today. That color is great on you!”
Would you consider this statement to be sexually harassing? Probably not, however, sometimes we say or do things that do make others feel uncomfortable. Many times, people are hesitant to tell us when they find our comments or behaviors unwelcome. Especially, when we have some level of “power” over them (for example, we are their supervisor or instructor).
Very simply, behavior is sexually harassing if 1) it is sexual in nature, 2) it is unwanted by the person to whom it is directed and 3) a reasonable person would understand the conduct is unwanted. Some of these behaviors are more obvious than others. We all understand that requesting some sexual favor in return for a better grade or promotion is sexual harassment. The more challenging situations involve subtle sexual harassment. The interaction between Jean and Morgan seems harmless given the information presented. What if, however, Jean frequently makes such comments to Morgan and follows up with a request for a date, which Morgan always declines? Do Jean’s and Morgan’s genders matter?
A few simple questions can be helpful as we think about our own behavior and its impact on others. For example,
- Would you want someone to act this way toward a partner, friend or family member?
- Is the other person initiating and participating in the behavior as well?
- Would you behave in the same way if your partner were standing next to you?
- Would you behave the same way if the person were of the other gender?
It is extremely important that we all understand sexual harassment and are familiar with the most recent policies and laws. Furthermore, UW-L is required to provide sexual harassment training to all employees. Anyone who supervises others is required to receive updates regularly. You can access the Regent and UW-L sexual harassment policies at www.uwlax.edu/AAOD/policies/policies_sexual_harassment.htm.
Last August, Judith Trampf, UW System director of Workforce Diversity, presented sexual harassment updates to members of our campus. Thanks to the magic of technology (and Terry Wirkus!), we were able to record her presentation and make it available at the HUB |Staff Training Web page www.uwlax.edu/hub/staff_training.htm under “Tutorials and Web-Based Training.” There is also a link to a Sexual Harassment quiz. Your completion of the quiz will be recorded as evidence that you have received the updates. Thank you for taking the time to stay informed! — Submitted by Carmen Wilson, Chancellor's Office.

For students
By Charlene Holler, Academic Specialist, Counseling and Testing Center
Halloween, the ending of daylight saving time, and foggy mornings are all signs that it is midterm of fall semester.
This week my suggestion is to assess your academic standing at this midpoint of the term. Are you at the grade you would like to be at in each of your classes? Are you up to date with your readings? Have you started semester-long projects or papers? Have you been evaluating what study techniques are working best for you? Have you tried to find better strategies when your established methods are not working well in a particular class? Do you feel you are ready to tackle the next seven weeks before finals?
If you do not feel as optimistic as you would like about the rest of this semester, I invite you to do something about that NOW! Talk to your professors and get their take on your class standing; seek out-of-class help, such as tutors or other students who are doing well in the class; or make an individual appointment with me by stopping by 170 Morris Hall or calling 785.8073. I will try to address your specific questions and give you some practical ideas to try.
