UW-L to stage 'The Diviners'
Play tells a story of self-discovery, personal strength
UW-L's theatre arts department will open its season with a compelling story of self discovery and personal strength. “The Diviners,” by Jim Leonard, Jr., will be staged in Toland Theatre in the Center for the Arts. Performances are set Friday-Sunday, Oct. 10-12, and Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 16-19. Curtain time is 7:30 nightly, except for Sunday matinees at 2.
“The Diviners” chronicles residents of a small town in rural Indiana as it struggles to cope with physical and spiritual needs amidst hardships of the Great Depression. Buddy, a gentle yet misunderstood boy with the gift for divining, befriends a disenchanted preacher barely clinging to his faith. The two find a common bond and work together to uncover the hope and truth for which each has been searching. When the townspeople demand the preacher return to the way of life he no longer believes in, both the man and the boy are driven to a crisis of trust.
“The Diviners” was Jim Leonard, Jr.’s, first work for which he received the Student Playwriting Award at the 1980 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
Tickets are $4 for UW-L students; $10 for other students, senior citizens and children; and $12 for others. Tickets go on sale Monday, Oct. 6. Box Office hours are 1-4:30 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and one hour before show times. For reservations, call the Box Office at 785.8522.

Donated bikes that cannot be refurbished are often transformed into functional works of art. Thanks to a bit of creativity, a roll of electrical tape and an ever-present need for furnishings that can withstand the rigors of college life, this chair was born. |
Give a bike ... win a chair
UW-L Green Bike Program to raffle off "bike chair” to donors
UW-L's Rec Sports Outdoor Connection provides a valuable service for the La Crosse area. The Green Bike program provides refurbished bicycles to students for any duration of time for $20. When bicycles are returned, students receive $10 of their original investment back. The service provides an inexpensive alternative to automobile use, encourages physical activity, and helps protect the environment by properly recycling bicycle frames and parts.
The Green Bike program, which began in 2004, has refurbished and rented over 200 bikes and recycled more than 40,000 pounds of metal.
Inspired by designer Andy Greg, the Outdoor Connection has also found another creative way to recycle bikes: creating furniture. By using bike and wheel frames, as well as rubber tire tubes, a very comfortable, unique chair is created. The Outdoor Connection will be raffling off “bike chairs” to donors and supporters. Individuals who donate bikes, bike parts, time, or even money, will have their name placed into the drawing to win. The more individuals donate, the better chance they have to win a “bicycle chair.”
With more than 100 people currently waiting for their opportunity to check out a Green Bike, bike donations of all models, conditions and sizes are needed. Public awareness and involvement is essential to the success of the Green Bike program.
Consider donating new or used bikes to keep the program alive. For more information, contact Outdoor Connection at 785.8860 or e-mail crye.davi@students.uwlax.edu.

Linking to articles
Many library databases now make it easier for faculty and staff to copy and paste links to specific articles. In the past, when people would copy links from databases, such as those supplied by EBSCOhost, the links might not work when pasted into D2L or other course pages. Students who clicked the link, hoping to read the article, were likely to receive error messages.
Links that are copied and pasted from the browser’s address bar often do not work for library databases because they come from deep within the database and do not reflect the authentication information necessary to view the page when starting a new browser session.
To link successfully to a specific article, it is best to use a “persistent link.” Many databases now display persistent links somewhere in the article record. The library has a Web page that shows how to find and link to articles using persistent links in databases such as EBSCOhost, ScienceDirect and JSTOR. See www.uwlax.edu/murphylibrary/database/linking.htm or as a link from the Faculty and Staff page at www.uwlax.edu/murphylibrary/faculty/
