Centennial Campaign update

| Daniel Sutherland 1952-2006 |
His nickname was "Gut Pile." It was a name he picked up from his infamous "road kill" lab sessions. As a professor of parasitology, the study of parasitic organisms, Daniel Sutherland often brought "road kill" into class for his lab sessions.
"When walking by his classroom door, I often wondered how the students got through it," says biology Professor Peg Maher.
But they did. Sutherland helped them discover that what you find in a dead skunk can be incredibly interesting, explains Roger Haro, biology.
He also taught students, by example, that working hard can be fun, says Maher.
Sutherland joined UW-L's biology department in 1994 and quickly found his niche. Along with teaching, Sutherland developed a new required course in organismal biology, took students on forays into the marsh, mentored junior faculty members and stood his ground on issues that mattered to him. Haro saw him as a role model for students and science faculty alike.
"Dan was engaged at all levels. He was an incredible scholar who cared about his students," he says. "He was very productive and his work is cited in some extremely fine journals. We joke that, even in his death, Dan is published in better journals than the rest of us."
At 54, in May 2006, Sutherland died of a stroke.
"A teacher affects eternity he can never tell, where his influence stops." |
In his honor, friends and colleagues Haro, Maher and Jim Wiener, River Studies, are spearheading an effort to raise $75,000 to have the courtyard in UW-L's new academic building, "Centennial Hall," named "The Daniel R. Sutherland Memorial Courtyard."
They chose the courtyard because Sutherland was a field biologist who often worked outdoors. It is the place they feel best reflects his love for the outdoors.
Haro and Maher chose to donate to the campaign mostly to honor Sutherland, they say, but also because they see investing in the academic building as good for campus and beneficial for everyone. "This is my dream job," Haro says. "UW-L is part of my life. We have a lot to be proud of."
The total raised in gifts and pledges for the Sutherland Courtyard is $65,500. Those who have designated their gift to this naming opportunity include:
- Keith Beyer, chemistry
- Bonita Bratina, microbiology
- A. Glenn Brice, biology
- Scott, biology, and Amy Cooper, College of Science and Health
- Faye Ellis, biology
