Student work featured in theatre productions at UW-L

UW-L's theatre arts department is showcasing talents of current students in a variety of productions. A staged reading of Sam Gutierrez's original script presented Oct. 24 started the season's events. Upcoming productions include an acting recital, an illusionist show and a night of scenes. All performances are in Frederick Theatre, Morris Hall, and are free and open to the public. Tickets are not required; however, seating is limited and is first come, first served.

  • Ashley Lanphear continues her theatrical experience with her senior acting recital at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. Seen in recent UW-L productions including “A Christmas Carol,” “As You Like It,” “bobrauschenbergamerica,” “Arabian Nights” and “The Diary of Anne Frank,” Lanphear is no stranger to the university stage. Her performance, “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” will feature a wide selection of scenes and monologues highlighting a variety themes and stories.
  • John Staats is Robert Ruse, an illusionist performer who unlocks the mind and the imagination in “Might of Thought.” The performance features mind reading and mind control feats that are sure to leave the audience questioning the possibility of psychic ability and the supernatural. The performance is at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.
  • Directing students will present their semester scene projects over the course of three performances in early December. Directing scenes will take place at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7; 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15; and at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16. The student directed and performed scenes will cover a variety of genres and motifs and scene selection will vary during each performance.

Eagle mascot

Eagle naming contest continues

Your help is needed so the Eagle mascot gets a name.

It’s time to pick from 10 names submitted by students in the name-the-eagle contest. UW-L students, staff and faculty — those with the uwlax.edu e-mail address domain — will be able to vote one time for their choice among the top 10 selected through Saturday, Nov. 7.

The 10 names will be pared down to three and from Nov. 11-21, students, staff and faculty can cast a single vote for their choice among the trio of suggestions.

The winning name will be announced at the annual Alumni Cup game Tuesday, Nov. 25, at Mitchell Hall. One person who voted for the winning name will be selected randomly. That person will receive a life-time general admission All-Sports pass to all home athletic contests, excluding conference and regional tournament games. The winner will also have a $100 donation given to his or her favorite UW-L student organization.

For more information about the contest, or to take part in it, visit: www.uwlax.edu/name-the-eagle.

Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center sets fall reception

This past summer's archaeological digs throughout the La Crosse area will be the focus of a presentation during the annual Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center's fall reception.

The event begins with a social hour at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Awards will be presented at 7, followed by a lecture at 7:30.

The digs were directed by MVAC Executive Director Joseph Tiffany and MVAC Archaeologist Wendy Holtz-Leith. They will detail digs from phase II of excavations at the Lower Sand Lake site prompted by future development and road improvements. Among the finds were fragments of worked copper, obsidian flakes, the stem of a catlinite tobacco pipe and early Mississippian pottery. Additional findings from other investigations will be highlighted.

Filling out confidential hate incident report form helps monitor, reduce occurrences

Fill out a Hate Incident Report Form and help with anticipation, prevention, response and restitution.

UW-L formulated a Hate Response Team in fall 2005 to develop a hate incident reporting form because occurrences of hate are counter to UW-L's mission and because everyone has a right to feel safe. The university community is committed to maintaining a working and learning environment in which students, faculty and staff can develop intellectually, professionally, personally and socially. Such an environment must be as free from intimidation, violence, harassment and hate as possible.

Any harmful act which appears to be motivated or is perceived by the victim to be motivated all or in part by race, religion, ethnic background, sexual orientation or disability is considered a hate incident. Completing the form is an important step to understanding our campus climate and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome. To get the form, go to www.uwlax.edu/campusclimate and click on “Hate Incident Form.” All students, faculty and staff who are victims or witnesses of hate incidents are encouraged to report.

The confidential reporting form helps with monitoring occurrences of hate incidents both on and off campus and addressing behaviors leading to hate incidents. The identity of the victim will be kept confidential. Completing the form will not necessarily result in criminal or university action; however, the type of incident and/or the victim’s willingness to take further action will determine whether or not additional steps will be taken.

Contact the Research and Resource Center for Campus Climate at 785.5094 if you have any questions or concerns.
