In the news

"State should find grant money for students most in need," Editorial, La Crosse Tribune, Sept. 8. The state is faced with growing budget challenges, and there's no question that legislators are juggling a lot of priorities in a tough economic environment. Everyone wants more, of course. But it's troubling that as many as 4,000 students in Wisconsin's technical college system could be denied financial aid for this school year because the state fund for it has run dry ... PressDisplay
Murphy Library Notes

New newspaper database available

Murphy Library now subscribes to a database of newspapers that is easy to read, search and print. PressDisplay, available at the library Web site and featured on the library Home page, manages to present entire newspapers in an easy-to-read format that comes close to replicating the print experience.

PressDisplay provides access to over 700 newspapers from 76 countries in 38 languages in full-color and full-page format. Users can browse articles and other key content, such as pictures, advertisements and classifieds, for the last 60 days.

At first glance, PressDisplay might look similar to other online newspapers, but once an individual newspaper is selected, an interactive version of the paper appears, with tables of content and thumbnails for every page, along with clickable URLs, e-mails and phone numbers in all articles and most advertisements.

Because the PressDisplay software works a little differently than most Web sites, librarians suggest that new users click on the question mark icon, which appears in the top right corner of every page, to find usage guides and tutorials.

PressDisplay has been added to the library collection to offset the loss of in-print newspapers, many of which are no longer available for same-day delivery.
