University Communications - Faculty, Staff, Students

What if a reporter calls me? An open relationship with the media and direct access to campus experts fosters goodwill and makes it easier for journalists to do their job. That's why we encourage reporters to call faculty, staff and students directly when they have questions of those who are equipped to answer them. University Communications maintains a list of experts on a variety of subjects of academic and general interest. If you have an area of interest beyond your vocation and would like to be added to the list, please contact us.

If you are contacted by the media for a story, please advise University Communications. We endeavor to monitor coverage UW-L receives in the media and identify and anticipate trends and relevant topics in the media to maximize our public relations efforts.

All media inquiries that request a response on behalf of the university or are about a subject outside your area of expertise should be passed along to Brad Quarberg, associate director of University Communications, at 608.785.8572 (office) or e-mail: quarberg.brad@uwlax.edu.

For information about UW-L's intercollegiate athletics programs, refer questions and requests to UW-L's Sports Information Director Dave Johnson at 608.785.8493. E-mail: johnson.dav2@uwlax.edu. Visit the Sports Information Web site at http://www.uwlathletics.com/.

If you're contacted by a member of the media and are unsure how to answer a reporter's question or need advice on how to prepare for an interview, call us.

What about records requests? Out of concerns for the privacy and protection of our students, faculty and staff, all requests for records should be submitted in writing to Debbie Veglahn, senior administrative program specialist, in the Administration and Finance office, veglahn.debo@uwlax.edu.

Wish to promote an event? University Communications serves as the news bureau for UW-L. We produce the Campus Connection (for faculty, staff and students) newsletter, distributed weekly via e-mail. The Campus Connection is shared with the local media, Board of Regents, and local legislators. In addition, all news releases and other vehicles that share information about UW-L are written and distributed by this department, and we are the primary point of contact with the media.

If you'd like help promoting an event, contact Brad Quarberg, associate director of University Communications, at 608.785.8572/quarberg.brad@uwlax.edu; or Sue Lee, Campus Connection/Eagle Connection editor, at 608.785.8497 / lee.sue@uwlax.edu.

Please allow at least three weeks' lead time.

Have a unique story to tell? If you have an idea for a story, please contact us. Remember, the most important criteria for sharing a story idea with the media are that it is timely and of interest to a majority of viewers (TV), listeners (radio) or readers (newspaper). Remember, we can't share what we don't know.

Plan to publish a brochure or newsletter? If you wish to produce printed materials (newsletters, brochures, flyers, etc.), contact us first.

University Communications provides a full range of creative services including copy writing, graphic design and vendor coordination to promote a wide range of programs and organizations across campus. We are also responsible for assuring that all printed materials are consistent in look and message. To support our efforts to effectively market the UW-L brand, it is critical these standards are not compromised.
