Summer 2008 at UB @ UW-L

Check out the SUMMER CALENDAR!   Special info for PARENTS!  More about our TRIP TO MILWAUKEE!

Here's the brand new, totally useful (and revised!)  SUMMER PUMP UP! A paper copy has been mailed to you!

THIS WEEK, WE ...

SURVIVOR WEEK UB students continued with classes and activities. They are training for strength and endurance - qualities they will need to successfully complete college. Of all students who start college, fewer than 60% ever graduate. For the population UB serves, the percentage is lower. Summer UB gives students the chance to learn perseverance and practice working through the tough and exhausting times. Survivor week activities included Gotcha!, The Penny War, and a variety of challenges and puzzles. Ask your student!

JOB SHADOWING This was the last week of senior job shadow appointments. We've heard from several that their hosts were great and their experiences were awesome! If you are the parent of a senior, ask about your student's favorite job shadow experience! Thank you cards are going out to hosts soon - writing a good thank you note is a very useful skill!

COMING UP NEXT WEEK Next week is our last week on campus. Students will have finals on Tuesday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 16.

MILWAUKEE Each summer UB takes a trip to a major city. This year we will travel to Milwaukee (July 20-24) to visit colleges, businesses, and museums. You will receive more details about the trip on Wednesday, July 16. The trip is a privilege and UB staff will decide who will and will not go based on academic performance, classroom effort, attitude, and/or behavior. If we decide your child will not go on the trip, please talk with her or him about the reasons and ask to review weekly grade reports. If you have additional questions please call Antoiwana at 608 785-8763.

PARENTS - PLEASE NOTE

STUDENTS WILL MOVE OUT on Wednesday, July 16 between 4 and 6 p.m. Please talk to your student this weekend to arrange a time to move out. You will be able to drive on the sidewalk near Trowbridge to pack your vehicle but vehicles must be moved back to the street as soon as they are packed.

PARENTS!

UB's not easy! You may have already heard this from your student! But neither is college, and our graduates tell us that summer UB really helped them be successful in college. Many summer students feel that they lack free time, but this is also true of college freshmen. A college student's CLASS schedule may look easy, with many open spaces between classes, but when you fill in the study time required for each class, you'll find there's not much time that's not taken up by class or study. In fact, for every hour of a college class, students are expected to spend an additional two to four hours of study time outside of class! The full summer UB schedule may seem like a lot, but it's training your student for the hard work they will encounter in college.

This is not to say that UB summer students don't have fun or free time. Recreation and arts options - from cooking to music and dance to team sports - give them a break from academic work. And evening free time, from 8:30 to 10 p.m. each evening, let them have some breathing time. Summer UB is like a training camp. It's building skills, muscles, strength and endurance for students so they can be outstanding at college and graduate. It's a big investment, but the pay off is definitely worth it!

Many studies have been done about why students whose parents did not attend college drop out of college themselves. Generally, these students have "low coping skills." Small problems for these students become major obstacles and lead to higher drop out rates. Summer UB tries to help students learn better communication and coping skills which will increase their chances of graduation from college and help them in their day to day lives.

UB's trip to Milwaukee!

Sunday, June 20  Leave time TBD

We'll take a COACH BUS to Milwaukee for the comfort (and sanity!) of our students and staff. Our leave time is yet to be determined. Students and parents will receive a packet of information the week before the trip. We already know that each student will be able to take just one suitcase or pack. No need to bring a fan - UW-Milwaukee provides these in each room. Be sure to wear and/or bring a good, sturdy, comfortable pair of shoes - we'll be doing a LOT of walking!

Most students and staff will attend the magnificent 31st annual Festa Italiana! With 10 stages of music and entertainment, dancing, cultural demonstrations, historic information and 40 restaurants representing the finest Italian and Sicilian food this side of Italy, it should be a great first night in Milwaukee. Featured will be 12 year old singing sensation, Julian Sage Miyata. Also appearing, Danceworks.

OR

Students will go to Six Flags Great America for an afternoon of fun and educational programming.

Other students will take advantage of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's Preview Day recreation options at the Union Recreation Center.
