Now seeking Upward Bound tutors for second semester 2010-2011!
Who?
Prefer students with junior status or above with cumulative gpa of 3.0 or higher. Men and multicultural students encouraged to apply. Must be able to tutor in one or more (versatility preferred) of these high school subjects: Math (algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics); Science (science matters, physical science, biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy/physiology, etc.); Language Arts (English, writing, composition, reading, literature, etc.); ESOL; Social Studies (history, social studies, economics, psychology, sociology, etc.); World Language (Chinese, French, German, Spanish)
What?
Work with college bound high school students - track a small group (4 to 6) of students through the semester; help them learn and practice college level skills including time management, test preparation, note taking, study and other skills; help them and all students at the session with subjects you are qualified to tutor. There may be extra work throughout the semester - attending/working at program sponsored monthly Saturday events; chaperoning students at cultural activities; driving students to/from events on and off campus. At end of semester, write a one page summary about each assigned student. Meet regularly through semester with professional staff/mentors. Excellent opportunity for students majoring in education or other social services but also great for students who like to work with and help others.
When? Where?
UB tutoring is held in the evenings. Some sessions are held out of town - Upward Bound provides transportation and pays for travel time. We are looking for someone who can work one or two nights per week:
Mondays, we tutor in Holmen from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. With travel time, the commitment would be about four hours (5:00 to 9:00 p.m.)
Tuesdays we hold a supplemental session in Wimberly Hall from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Usually we hire tutors who are already working one of the other nights for Tuesdays.
Wednesdays are tutoring nights for Sparta and Tomah students. Travel time (1.5 hours for Sparta, 2.0 hours for Tomah) is added. Sparta tutoring starts at 3:30 and ends at 7:00 p.m. Tomah tutoring begins at 4 and ends at 7:30 p.m.
Thursdays we have tutoring in Wimberly Hall from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Why?
The goal of Upward Bound is to provide academic and motivational support for eligible students so they will go to and be successful in college after high school graduation. Most of our students are high achieving; barriers to higher education may be related to family income, lack of college experience in the family, lack of knowledge about steps to college. Some of our students need support and guidance to work to their potential.
How?
UB tutors are our "front line" - working directly with students one on one or in a small group. Tutors become mentors and role models, exhibiting good personal and academic habits and passing along their "secrets of success" to UB students.

Complete an application - download and print the online application OR pick one up from the Upward Bound office, 176 Murphy (west side of building). Turn in your completed application with a current transcript (does not have to be official) by December 10, 2010.
