Grant Review Process
- Committee members are given copies of the grant proposals.
- Each member reads the
proposals making written comments with respect to various
aspects including (but not limited to):
- Quality of written proposal
- Methods and outcomes
- Originality
- Potential value of educational experience for student
- Relative student independence in both proposal and its execution
- Appropriateness of budget
- Sponsor’s support letter
- The committee then meets as a whole to discuss each proposal; covering individual comments and questions to clarify elements of the proposal. A representative from the Office of International Education attends to provide feedback and answer questions on the International Undergraduate Research Grant proposals.
- After this meeting, committee members individually reexamine the proposals and give each one a numerical score.
- Scores are reported to the grant’s office, which compiles them and provides the committee with a final tabulation and ranking based on the compiled scores.
- The committee then meets to determine the level of funding given to proposals based on this ranking.
- As soon as possible, students
are notified regarding the status and funding level of their
proposal.
The Undergraduate Research Grant Committee is committed to funding as many proposals as possible, at the level requested. Unfortunately, the amount of money available to fund undergraduate research grants is limited. Students who have questions about the review process, or the level of funding that they receive may request a meeting with the committee chair to review the decision process.
